First of all, religion gave a massive impact on the rate of immigration which escalated to the population of 300 million that America has today. America gave what most countries at the time did not partake in which was religious freedom, that is why many people came to America and still come today for that reason. For an example the Irish came to America for that exact reason as there was religious persecution going on in Ireland as well plus America tolerated their Roman Catholic Religion. As more people came to America the larger the colonies grew and how it developed. Furthermore, Religion also played a part on unifying the people.
Over the past decade many revisions have been made to how people publicly celebrate their faith. Church and state cases have been continues throughout history ranging from whether Jehovah witnesses should be excused from saluting the American flag to whether religious symbols and sayings should be in government buildings or not. The lack of clarification which the term separation of church and state provides sets an unclear message to what the term actually means. The U.S. is a very religious country with religions spanning across the world. Separation of church and state is meant to keep religious freedom while keeping it out of both politics and people with separate religions.
McMinn (2011) suggests that Christian counselors should challenge the majority worldview and reinforce the Christian doctrine. However, the Christian counselor should not be quick to dismiss the secular worldview that stands on the basis of scientific evidence, but find a way to successfully integrate the two. McMinn (2011) indicates that there are also new challenges in defining Christian counseling. Many clients are confused as what Christian counseling really entails (McMinn, 2011). This confusion only further magnified because a majority of religious interventions are not widely accepted by the American Psychological Association due to their lack of scientific foundation (McMinn, 2011).
Then there is the people who don’t put in the time and effort to grow as a believer in their religion, like not wanting to pray, go to church or study up and learn more about what they believe in. These followers have a weak dedication but on the opposite end of the spectrum, there are followers with a strong devotion to what they believe in. They are willing to face any trial such as persecution or even death because their beliefs are just so strong. According to Webster’s New World Dictionary, a martyr is defined as “one who chooses to suffer and die for ones faith or principles.” (Agnes 397) Martyrs have been around since they made their mark in society during the Roman Empire. They continue on their legacy even today especially in other parts of the world like China or Japan.
A primary cause of the Crusades was religious differences between the Muslims and the Christians. Christians made pilgrimages to Jerusalem, and when they saw that their Holy Land was owned by Muslims, they felt that they had a religious obligation to take back this land. Muslims felt that the land belonged to them, and that what the Christians were trying to do was unmerited. This is an example of the external pressures both cultures experienced in relation to the ownership of their Holy Land. Christians were promised that if they joined the war, they would be forgiven of sins and guaranteed a place in heaven, which was irresistible to many people.
Elizabeth Perricone 397 Dan Churchwell-Introduction to Philosophy Research Paper 1 2/22/2013 Anti-Intellectualism among Evangelicals Philosophers have been opposing, contemplating, and defending the idea of God for centuries. The majority of philosophers in today’s day and age take the arrogant view of pushing the concept of “God” out of their philosophy. They do this by their prideful standing against submission or conceiving a being higher than themselves and seeing those who believe in such a being as, leaning on a mere crutch that humanity has surpassed long ago. The poor opinion America’s culture has on the Christian Church’s intelligence is not surprising. Movies and TV shows have been portraying Christians as judgmental, mindless, know-it-alls for years.
I believe religion is a very important part of the American society but should GOD have to compete with evolution if every dollar has God on it why is evolution being taught in schools and religion being short changed most of the time now. Evolution is a type of religion in a way more of a theory of life though I believe scientist who think way too much about each and every detail of life god made everything from the air you breathe to the things you see including you and me. God gave us the ability to make our own choices which I believe has led to people overthinking life and making up theories of it like “Evolution”. People these days have found ways to divert the rule of god by having more of an explanation towards why things happen. Religion is becoming a backdrop in today’s society.
• The Theory of Archetypes - Geza Roheim argues that the theory of archetypes is unnecessary. As humans share the same experiences, such as dependence on parents, it is not surprising that they construct similar myths. Also, some religious myths come from the experiences of a particular community and so it seems unlikely that they are born out of an idea which is present in all humans. Therefore, it is argued that Jung is not justified in stating that there is an ‘instinct for God’ just because people believe in God. Also, many people do not believe in God.
His notion of virtues differed, however, from the Puritans who believed that being close to God was most virtuous and focused on reading scripture and prayers instead of being good citizens. Also, unlike the Puritans, Franklin wasn’t as deeply devoted to God. He did not attend mass every week and had respect for other religions and other religious principles. He did not follow God’s orders unquestionably, like the Puritans, and saw doubt and altered his behavior even though to other Christians it would be a sin. Franklin and
To start off with, before anyone can pick a side they need background information. Unfortunately, with many of the debates today, in previous years people are uneducated about the topic in which they are arguing. Most people that strongly disagree with the theory of evolution are very closed minded and are not willing to accept or listen to any ideas that do not support their own. All of these people chooses to believe and accept their religion and god. Many of these people think that evolution disproves their religion and throws away their god and this is not true.
