There are lots of people who are unaware of puppy mills and what they do, because of this they can help contribute towards them without realising that they are. Contribution towards puppy mills and puppy farms is simply done by purchasing puppies from the pet shop. A puppy mill can have anywhere between 200 to 300 female dogs and 50 male dogs which are forced to breed to create puppies to sell to pet shops. The dogs are kept in confined cages their whole life and never
This would help limit the problem to where it is only within the country, therefore lowering the amount of work that would have to be done in order to track down the puppy mills and begin to work towards eliminating the problem. While there are many that disagree with puppy mills, there are those that don’t find them all that bad because not all commercial breeding fit the harsh criteria of puppy mills. Although there are many inhumane puppy mills, there are also some that are humane, taking care of the puppies, giving them proper nutrition, exercise, and care. This may be true; however the likelihood of these kinds of puppy mills is rare and not prominent enough to consider puppy mills
On the contrary, even a Chihuahua puppy the breeder considers extremely large would probably weight less than two and one-half pound at eight weeks of age. It is common to have a six-month-old Chihuahua that only weighs three pounds. Until a Chihuahua puppy is several months old he or she must have high quality food and fresh water available at all times. Because Chihuahua puppies have very tiny bodies, they should never be placed on a timed feeding schedule. In opposition to this, in a regulation on the number of hours it may be safe to withhold food from an animal, the IATA states that a pet can be without additional feeding for up to 12 hours after the flight is airborne (“International Air Transport Association”).
The Puppy Mill Plague The breeding and living conditions in puppy mills are ethically wrong, and stronger legislation is needed to ensure the protection of dogs that are being bred and raised for human companionship. Dogs are bred at a greater frequency than they naturally should be, which creates health problems for both the mothers and their offspring. Housing conditions at puppy mills are almost unilaterally overcrowded, and dogs may live outdoors entirely exposed to the elements. Dogs that come from puppy mills often experience social problems. Because of the cruelty that prevails at puppy mills across the country, animal rights groups work diligently to promote new legislation the ban inhumane practices at puppy mills.
The solution to this problem is adopting from a shelter or rescue. Many peoples excuse is that they are looking for a certain breed, but many dogs sitting in your
While it may be cute for a 5 pound tiny dog to put his paws on your leg when you come home from school, it is allowing a dominant behavior. If you allow this little dog to be your pack leader they will developed many behavior issues, such as jealousy, aggression with other dogs and sometimes with humans, and will become undeniably suspicious of people except for their owner. When strangers are present, they will begin to follow their owner's every move, keeping as close as possible. A Chihuahua who is pack leader of their humans may snap at children. This breed is generally not recommended for children, not because they are not good with them, but because most people treat the Chihuahua differently than they would a large dog, causing them to become untrustworthy.
Far too many are dumped along desolate roads where the owner cannot be seen throwing their dog or cat away like trash to fend for themselves. What many people do not know is that once a dog or cat is a “domesticated” animal they usually cannot survive out in the wild on their own, they need their human companion for food and shelter. Many people also do not believe in getting their pet fixed (spayed, neutered). They believe that it harms them in some way, but this is not true. Supply and demand also plays a role in the overpopulation problem looming the United States.
Buying online, from the pet shop or even a simple news advertisement is justifying the puppy mills actions. Even taking a vow to adopt your next pet is one step in the right direction. Personally, I have bought from a puppy mill. It is terrible, but even worse to know that it is right under our noses. (Located near Nimbin) By supporting this industry I have invested almost $3000 into one breeding ground.
By adopting a shelter animal you are supporting the shelters good work in your community and help homeless pets. Shelter Dogs Make Great Pets Many dogs end up in shelters because of circumstances beyond their control . They were victims of death in the family, illness, divorce or a move that did not include them. Some were displace by a new baby. Some were displaced of a behavior problem that their pet parent could not correct or were not able to resolve.
Personally, I am an animal lover; I don’t believe in hurting another species just because it works for me, or benefits me. Through my own observations and research on the topic of living a “cruelty free” life, I find that a lot of people claim to be animal lovers but in saying that they think they’re a support to animals by purchasing wildlife film, photos, visiting zoos, Sea World, and the circus. What I think many animal lovers don’t realize is that, by supporting these forms of wildlife media they are altering the lives of the animals in negative ways. As McKibben wrote, “in the wild, photographers often need to subtly harass wildlife to get their shots” (267). Whether they are starved until they become desperate to kill for food, or antagonized until their day is ruined, it is irrelevant to these media workers; What’s important is getting a money shot to sell to the people who are animal lovers.
