Japonica Grant English 1102 May 30, 2013 Dr. Mallory “Abortion has become one of the most controversial issues in American culture and politics today. This is due to people having their own beliefs and definitions of what an abortion really is. According to Medicine Plus, an abortion is a procedure to end a pregnancy. The procedure is done by a licensed health care professional. Since the U.S. Supreme court legalized abortions in 1973, competing groups have fought to either restrict or increase access to the procedure, leading to heated debates among religious organizations, political activists, state legislatures, and judges.” (Williams) There are times when a situation may occur where the child was not expectant, or a victim may have suffered through rape, which leads to pregnancy, or maybe the mother’s life is in danger. Christians believe that every child is a gift from God. Ecclesiastes 11:5 states as you do not know the path of the wind, or how the body is formed in a mother’s womb, so you cannot understand the works of the Lord. Some may view abortion as a selfish act. In a recent sermon in France, Pope John Paul reiterated his absolute refusal to allow abortion, saying "Every human being who is conceived has the right to exist, because the life which is given no longer belongs" to those who conceived it.
