A Long Way Round A Travel Journal “I got my ticket for the long way round, The one with the prettiest of views; It’s got mountains, it’s got rivers, It’s got sights to give you shivers; But I’m sure it would be prettier with you.” * Cups by Anna Kendrick It was a beautiful Sunday morning. By 6:30, my backpack and I headed for Pelaez Street where almost everyone else was waiting for each other inside the Apple bus. It was already cool inside when I hopped in. While others were busy chatting, laughing and making other kinds of noises, I seated myself near the front door, prepped up my camera, and thought of what could possibly happen that day. A few minutes later, after our complete attendance was checked by the Kabilin crew, the wheels rolled forward and we were underway. “Welcome to Bus Apple bound for Medellin! Thank you for choosing Kabilin Tours as your companion for today!” These sentences broke the seemingly noisy silence among the excited turistas. Our tour guide for that day was Sir Boyax, one of the teachers from USC’s History department. Like a real tour guide, he gave us pieces of information about almost every city/municipality that we’d pass through. But unlike most tour guides, he also shared with us probably the funniest and greenest of jokes that would somehow relate to every topic about the city/municipality that he was discussing and even teased some of the students and the Kabilin crew members. I could not resist smiling and giggling. Because of this, the very long trip to Medellin seemed like a short one to me. On the way to Medellin, I learned that: Mandaue was famous for its incomparable bibingka; Consolacion was to be pronounced as “kon-so-lath-yon”; Churches determine the zip code of places; The San Fernando Rey Church in Lilo-an was one of the oldest in Cebu; The city proper of Danao is also an example of a typical pueblo
