They were most interested in sports, had male social groups and had a low tolerance for most girls. We discussed that family status and environment does play a significant role in the girls’ decisions and actions regarding which social group they entered into. We saw that the girls with single parents or from a low socioeconomic status tend to act out or try to gain negative attention from their peers and authority. In our group we discussed how one of the group members was a tomboy because she valued the respect of the boys for their drive and determination. Another girl in the group was a girlie girl because she went to an all-girls high school.
She was not afraid to flaunt herself at men and the media. Marilyn was a very outgoing, fun person. She was loved by everyone. By using the dumb blonde stereotype, it proved very successful for Marilyn’s career and her love life. She was actually a very intelligent woman but chose to play dumb.
The Woman of Willendorf may have been looked up to back in Common Era due to her capabilities. Her "womanly features" emphasized to show that she was respected because of what she has naturally, and her ability to reproduce. Barbie, on the other hand, is highly superficial. People look up to her now because she is beautiful, and is successful within her career as she has evolved to become other beings such as Barbie Police and Barbie Doctor. But the biggest difference with her is that achieving her looks may be highly unlikely.
I agree with this essay in the sense that people tend to feel uneasy when seeing a person with a disiablitty. I feel that way around my mothers sister who is mentally challenged. Because I am not around her enough, I react with a little bit of fear and curiosity because it is very different to me. I feel as though I
She felt the first two groups were more honorable in comparison to the last two. The concept of socioeconomic status is very evident in her approach. McDougald points out that the “superficial critics who have had contact only with the lower grades of Negro women, claim that they are more immoral than the other groups of women.” Just because a woman doesn’t go to college and maintain a career does not mean she is corrupted or shameful. This shallow view of women is the same view that some White Americans had of Black Americans. McDougald was participating in the torment of her own race and she did it with selfish reasons.
Evidently, Lina truly felt bad for Kretzsky, for she told him she was sorry, and he said he was sorry about her mother. This example shows Lina is sensitive and mature, as much as she wanted to spit in his face and laugh at him, she showed compassion. Andrius’ character shows that he is very unselfish, protective, and strong. All of his traits become stronger from beginning through end of Between Shades of Gray the more we get to see his character open up. Andrius shows maturity and unselfishness when he uses his misfortune to help others.
Paul captures her target audience very well as every mother wants to make sure their kid is safe and sound. She builds up a contrasting character of herself throughout the essay because at the start Paul was portraying her personality as a lazy and unclean mother (Paul 816). However as the essay continues we see the type of ‘purifier wielding neurotic’ Pamela Paul has become, which she criticized initially. This justification for this drastic change in character is due to the repugnant truth of chemicals within cleaning products. As a result of the changing in temperament the reader can see how alarming this topic is, raising awareness of the danger of carcinogens in cleaning products, The origin of the change we see in Pamela Paul is due to the time when she discovers that there are no ingredients listed on domestic cleaning products (Paul 817).
The daily lives of the mistreated and hardworking are explored, and told through the eyes of many. Though the dangers of writing such a book and speaking out the truth come with many consequences and upsets many along the way. Causing several broken relationships, but also helping to fix and gain others. Near the novels end all the maids who helped contribute to the Skeeter’s book; get payments from doing so, when the book becomes a best seller. Aibileen and many others learn valuable lessons after heart wrenching events of there
While others tend to hate themselves and inflict pain on their own bodies, until they feel as though they punished themselves enough. Sadly, there are many people that are trapped in this mind set, one of which is a friend of mine. A beautiful young woman, one who you would never think would be cutting herself. My friend Sasha and I were talking one day, and in that conversation she told me something that I found very disturbing. She told me that she had been abusing herself, and then she showed me the affects of the abuse.
Mainly because that stereotypical societal behavior is encouraged through advertisements on a daily basis. In the middle school years, the messages we send to boys and girls begin to hit them with full force as they become aware of and struggle to understand what it means to be a man or a woman in our society. We know that in adolescence girls self-esteem suffers. They often begin to feel less than competent and unsure of themselves. Some girls begin to lose their "voice" or "go underground" with their gifts and abilities as they absorb messages about what it means to be "feminine" in our culture.
