Devin Marshall English 101.004 Essay Assignment 1 “A Father’s Story” Analysis In “A Fathers Story” by Andre Dubus, Luke had to make a decision. The decisions we make in life not only affect the decision maker, but all the people around them. In a fathers story Luke had to make a decision about whether to protect his daughter or report her to the local law enforcement. Why did Luke make the decision not to expose his daughter to law enforcement? Luke is a very loving father, and he seems to show the most love to his daughter because she is the youngest, she comes and visits most often, and for the longest periods of time. Luke says “And if one of my sons had come to me that night, I would have phoned the police and told them to meet us with an ambulance at the top of the hill” (Dubus 117). Luke expresses that it is not that he loves his sons any less; but that he could bear to watch his sons take the punishment they would receive if they had done what their sister did. Even though he is protecting his daughter he is leaving a mark on the young man’s family. Luke doesn’t know that no one will find out about what happened. He is acting in the present and disregarding the future. How will his daughter be affected by the decision he made? She will always have the death of that young man on her conscience. Luke is a Christian man, but does he care about what God will do to him? What punishment will he take on later? While talking to God, Luke says “I love her more than I love the truth.” (Dubus 117) Luke will not allow the law to take his daughter away from him. He knows that what his daughter did was wrong but his love for her will not let him expose the truth about the situation. He somewhat voids man’s laws by not telling anyone what really happened in order to protect his daughter. He takes matters into his own hands. Luke takes on the role of God and
