The early american can be defined by two different belief system. The Puritans which believe in the literary interpretation of the Bible. To the Puritans God is the most important thing in their life and everything in their life is set out by God’s will. They conform to the strict teaching of the Bible without really thinking for themselves. The other belief system is the enlightenment, which takes a less religious approach and is based more on science and reasoning.The enlightenment focus on thinking for oneselves and questioning things. In William Bradford’s essay “Of Plymouth Plantation” he describes the hardship the puritan faced under King James I of England where he started to change things in Protestantism and attacking people who disagreed with him.(133) Fearing the religious persecution William Bradford and other separatists moved to Holland to have more religious freedom. They started following the teaching of John Calvin and calling themselves Puritan separating themselves from the main church of england. When they came over on the mayflower to set up the early colonies there was a lot suffering and death. There was sickness and hunger and most of people’s children die before they reach adulthood. The Puritan did everything they could just to survive the difficulty of setting up the colony. It may be because this hardship and struggle that the puritans develop their negative outlook on life. Their need for a God to save them to get through the struggle of the day. It can also explain their belief in superstition and fear of things like witches. These are mostly minority opinions it like the reverse of the puritan days when the belief in science and the enlightenment is considered an strange and weird now those belief are considered weird. Most people today would be similar to the enlightenment type of thinking than the puritans. They try to use reason and critical thinking before making any major decision and not just follow what other people tell to do. Today we also use science to try explain the world instead of religion which let up process technology must faster than we have before .
