Every decade throughout history develops its own set of fads, fashions, and culture. The 90’s was a period commonly thought of as the generation of baggy clothes and great music. “90’s kids”, as most people refer to them, know that there was a lot more to the mix- matched clothing and simplistic thinking. The spreading of technology, including the invention of the World Wide Web, problems involving gun violence and sexual harassment, the third-wave feminism movement, the acceptance of homosexuality, and of course the crazy clothes are all a part of the 90’s culture that effects society today. In the satirical movie, Clueless, written and directed by Amy Heckerling, she expertly intertwines the most important parts of the 90’s culture. The movie demonstrates the abolishment of the negative thoughts towards homosexuality, increased awareness of environmental protection, and the use of technology in everyday situations. Homosexuality was on the World Health Organization as a disease, but in 1990 the organization removed it from the list as it was becoming more accepted in society. Amy Heckerling flawlessly weaves the idea of homosexuality into her movie through the character, Christian. Heckerling makes it obvious that he is gay using subtle hints that are most commonly associated with a homosexual. Cher, the main character, is so caught up in his good looks to notice his sexual orientation which creates a comical idea of her falsely thinking he is falling for her. Once Cher finds out he is gay, she becomes “shopping buddies” with him, expertly showing acceptance. The approval of the gay population has grown drastically since then. The gay rights movement originated in the 90’s and has led to legalization of gay marriage in certain states and has become widely accepted in society which has decreased the amount of bullying and harassment towards homosexuals.
