It tells about the ups and the downs of the American attempt for freedom. The book takes you through key events and battles in the war between America and Great Britain. Author Thesis McCullough says in an interview with Edward Morris that the reason for him focusing on the year 1776 was, "because that was the low point of our fortunes, not just in the war, but, I think one can say, in the whole history of the country. The prospects of there even being a United States of America were never more bleak. Also, it was the year of the Declaration of Independence.” McCullough’s true main goal in this book was to show people how the revolutionary war really was.
He won a Pulitzer Prize for his book Founding Brothers: The Revolutionary Generation and he also won a National Book Award for his book American Sphinx: The Character of Thomas Jefferson, which were both bestsellers. This book examined the life and endeavors of the first President of the United States, General George Washington. In the book, Ellis covered three main parts of Washington’s life, his military feats in the French and Indian War, his achievements as a general during the American Revolution, and his terms as President of the United States all the way to his death in 1799. This book would be a delightful read for anyone who was looking to broaden their knowledge of George Washington or to dispel any of the famous myths about him also. For example, Washington never chopped down a cherry tree to prove to his father that he could not tell a lie or that he also never threw a silver dollar across the Potomac River.
The use of this rhetorical device allows him to establish his main idea subtly, due to the fact that some of the terms he uses, the German people would not understand. As Hitler goes into detail of explaining what he is going to do, he uses various terms that make the Germans believe he is doing well when in fact it is for a horrible crime. “...to conduct humanitarian warfare – that is, to attack only fighting troops.”(Hitler, Adolf). With this use of euphemism, Hitler is able to conceal that he is going to bomb large places but saying he is only attacking the troops that are fighting. This type of euphemism allows him to influence the German people with what their opinion on the issue is going to be.
Van Evera focused on how there were numerous factors, such as structural, political/environmental, and perceptual factors in which nationalism was a main cause of war. I believe that this article is the more accurate of the two articles, and this is because he is able to take the constructivist/ideological views that Suny uses, and incorporate them into his article, and rather than only explaining to the reader the political and historical ideologies that a nation may have. Van Evera also explicates his hypotheses by explaining that although there are constructivist ideologies such as: mythical beliefs, like self-glorification,
HOA Summer Assignment The Long Fuse by Laurence Lafore Outline Truth and the Historian Major Ideas Lafore begins the essay by writing about the influence World War I had on the world. Once called The Great War but now has turned into just another war in the history books. Events after 1945 have shed new light on the events leading up to 1914. The introduction briefly describes the causes of the war and the events leading up to them. While some historians look for one cause to the war, Lafore believes that each conflict is equally responsible for the war.
The way that the nation has settle conflicts with other nations by going to war has impacted each individual that calls the United States home. Inevitably, war has both positives and negatives aspects that would create a great research paper. “If you don’t stand for something, you will fall for
Much literature has been written about the events that occurred, the battles that were fought and the innovation and weapons that were used, but it is the people that were most important and pivotal in the war. The people far out weighed the battles, the weapons or machinery and it was the people and there stories that have and will remain victorious throughout modern American memory. Some may say that WWII was not the good war because America entered the war last and did not witness the majority of destruction, ethnic cleansing and killing caused by the Nazi regime. Some say believe that it’s because the war was fought elsewhere so damages and casualties weren’t seen on home land unlike in Europe. Whilst some say that WWII was not the good war because America simply took the easy route towards the end of the war with the introduction of nuclear weapons on
Mary Walsh 8/27/13 APUSH The Name Of War What makes a war memorable? Perhaps the tactics used to win, the weapons used to fight, or the words spoken to ignite it. King Philip’s War was memorable for many reasons; one being its gruesomeness and on the other hand the motives both sides had behind their combat. In The Name Of War by Jill Lepore it is clear that there are three major themes present in her writing: Puritan identity, language and literacy, and lastly memory. These themes all took a large role in why the war started and how it was finished.
Many American citizens in 1959 viewed the Vietnam War as a righteous battle against communism, similar to the Iraq War today however now many view this war as a necessary battle against terrorism. Looking at America's overall goal in Vietnam, it is evident that we did not come close to keeping South Vietnam from collapsing, who fell to communist rule in 1975 (Frankum 210). America's involvement in the conflicts of Vietnam and Iraq were so discordant that our government, people, and military were constricted. Yet both wars were fought with the knowledge that America may change the invaded nation, which brings a precarious question; what makes the government believe that they have the right to go into a country and change it to the way they
The U.S.A. views this war as a war against communistic aggression, but in reality they viewed it as a civil war struggle. News coverage was biased against the American aggression, which did more to defeat their army than the enemy soldiers. Both sides were glad to have this conflict over and done with, but for different reasons. Vietnam was not a glorious conquest, that the American public was use to obtaining and demanded. It was an early wake-up call for Americans to resolve issues on their home front prior to taking on another country's problems,
