In the same way, Bean will not know that Ender cares about him. Some manipulation is necessary in order to make soldiers the best that they can be. Ender does not understand how he is being manipulated, and it is necessary that he does not know. The only way for him to be a great commander is for him to hate the teachers, to blame them for what he has been forced to become, and he is right to do so. At the same time, they are only doing what they need to do.
It is important to realize that Dawson had previously disobeyed an official command and was disciplined for it by receiving a below average rating on a conduct report. This incident helps understand why Dawson followed the order to give a code red. It is clear that Dawson compromised his morals and conceded with the orders given to him because he was afraid of what would happen to him if he didn’t obey. However, why did Louden Downey comply and assist in the “training” of PFC Santiago? It was partially due to the fact that Dawson was his superior officer and instructed him to do so and the other reason was because he idolized Dawson and did not want to disappoint him.
While I agree with General Dempsey’s view on how to form the Army into a “Profession of Arms,” I don’t think today’s Army is quite there yet. I think The Army is going in the right direction but it will take time to change the culture. We need to understand that it is virtually impossible for all Soldiers to be professionals based on experience and expertise alone. We need to understand that not all Soldiers join today for honor, tradition, and/or wanting to be a part of a team. Soldiers are joining the military more and more to have a secure job with benefits for themselves and their family members.
He writes about how those high up who brought, supported, and funded the Prussian-like system did so to only enforce having a guarantee of a "servile labor force" and "mindless consumers." Gattos supports the idea that it is more than obvious that schooling is simply meant to separate, demoralize and "dumb the people down." I would have to agree for the most part with John Gatto's argument. The boredom in schooling along with the monotone teachings and textbook answers is rather familiar. Although Gatto argues that
Hernandez, Jose F. Ms.Oddino English 101 9-15-09 Class Warfare Josiah Bunting proves why our military is not truly diverse. As a lieutenant general and current superintendent of Virginia military institute, Buntin questions the true diversity of social classes in our military. From personal experience Bunting argues that the current generation lacks interest in out countries service. In the past it was considered an honor and of great value to serve ones country. By the abolishment of the draft in 1973, preferences began being made.
It was nice to see that with honestly comes respect and with respect comes loyalty. Wouldn’t it be nice if more people applied the law of solid ground to their way of living? It’s sad because this is not something you see much of anymore, it’s as if people are born careless and heartless. These are definitely not qualities that leaders can have. Colonel Shaw had character, heart and really cared about his soldiers and that’s what
The second lesson was that a leader needs to be seen as someone who is thriving under a difficult circumstance. This will inspire Soldiers to do their best because they will push themselves if they see you doing the same. As I said, easy lessons, but they need reinforcement. 3. Platoon Leader: A Memoir of Command in Combat by James R. McDonough Corey James: There are other books out there that pertain to our current operational environment, but not many that cover leadership like Platoon Leader.
He taught that sometimes leadership has to be personnel to be effective, that we should never give up on those who we have been given to train and lead, and that leader’s must supervisor their subordinates to show that they care for their well-being as well as that of the countries, it is our mission. Sergeant First Class Crutchfield peered into the black Iraq night sky and said to me, “The Army promotes Soldiers based on potential and merit that you posses not your deeds and accomplishments. It is this potential that leaders must recognize early in leadership. Through this we can teach our Soldiers to be disciplined and capable of making decisions in the most perilous of situations no matter the circumstances. While we
In the beginning of the film Colonel Shaw is asked to lead an all black company of union soldiers which he accepted. Accepting a position of that nature was very unpopular of that time but being a leader as Colonel Shaw was, he saw the significant contributions that could be made. His main focus was winning the war for the Union, not gaining self gratitude by becoming a colonel or the benefits that came along with the position. As the leader of the Union soldiers Colonel Shaw made sure to staff his unit by strengths. His commanders were not your typical well rounded individuals but individuals who were strong in a particular area for which they were put in those positions so they could succeed.
Others are just plan as day bad or horrible leaders. Last is the Soldier. I know that being a leader it is not our job to be friends with the Soldiers however it is good to become good acquaintances and get to know their Soldiers. That is when some things get crazy as Soldiers think a leader is becoming a friend and try to get away with things. That is not the case.
