Tyler Askew Professor White CCJS370 February 17, 2014 A General Strain Theory of Racial Differences in Criminal Offending – Discussion Question #2 The reading “A General Strain Theory of Racial Differences in Criminal Offending” by Kaufman, Rebellon, Thaxton, and Agnew presents explanations of how general strain theory can provide a reasonable justification on the racial differences in criminal offending. In my opinion, these authors provide logical reasoning to the differentiations between races in regards to crime and delinquency. Based on the reasons provided by the authors, I believe that general strain theory does provide the best explanation for these racial differences in criminal behavior. Throughout the reading, the authors contribute many reasons for the racial differences in crime and delinquency. The main concept behind these explications is that different races are faced with their own unique types of strains.
This may be because Black Prisoners often enter from impoverished backgrounds with higher rates of violent crimes; therefore “import “their cultural norms which condone violent behaviour. The other model of institutional aggression is the deprivation model. This claims that the characteristics of the prison itself is the reason rather than the prisoners. They argue that it is the experiences of imprisonment that causes extreme stress and frustration which in turns leads to violence. Sykes argues how the loss of freedom, heterosexual relationships, isolation and boredom leads inmates needing to engage in violence which is a reaction to the hurt they feel.

Discrimination is the act of denying individuals or groups the equal treatment that they have a right to. Discrimination can make a working place a living hell. It festers in a culture of silence, intimidation, and fear.
