Japanese planes were spotted by radar before the attack, but they were assumed to be a flight of American B-17s due in from the West Coast. The day after the assault, President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked Congress to declare war on Japan. Congress approved his declaration with just one dissenting vote. It was a calm normal day on September 11, 2001 when two commercial jets flew into the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers. 19 Al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commercial passenger jet airliners.
With the attacks on our nation on September 11, 2001 the effects have been felt and displayed all over the world. We are at war with Afghanistan and have been for just a little over 10 years. So why are we over there, what have we done, and when will our troops come home? On September 11, 2001 4 commercial airplanes were high-jacked two were flown into the world trade center, another flown into the pentagon, and one that was able to get taken over by passengers and crash landed into a field. During that day approximately 3000 people died according to the New York police and fire department.
The attacks by Al Qaeda on September 11th were co-ordinated and calculated they hit the heart of capitalism and also the Pentagon another plane was ditched in a field in Pennsylvania which may have been heading for Washington D.C. almost three thousand people from many different countries were killed that day so the effects were felt world-wide. The response to this was the ongoing “War on Terror” with the deposition of the Taliban being the goal. Modern American History HIST101-1502B-01 Individual Project 5 Tim Hartley 6/22/2015 9-11 On September, 11 2001 the United States was attacked by Islamic terrorists group Al-Qaeda. The official report is 19 members of these Islamic extremist group hi-jacked 4 airliners and carried out suicide attacks against targets inside the United States. At 8:45 a.m. an American airliner 767 loaded with 20,000 gallons of jet fuel flew into the North Tower of the World Trade center in New York City. The impact from this crash left a burning hole near the 80th floor of the 110-story skyscraper, instantly killing hundreds of people and trapping hundreds more in higher floors. 18 minutes after the crash as the news cameras broadcasted live images of what initially appeared to be a freak accident, a second Boeing 767–United Airlines Flight 175–appeared out of the sky and flew into the south tower of World Trade center near the 60th floor .
Not only was the choice of date, the method of the attacks was also smart and effective. The terrorists took the largest “bomb” there is to attack the target buildings. Before 9.11, Airplanes were widely accepted as the safest means to travel. Yet after the hijacking of 4 planes in a single day, Americans start to fear that one day the plane they take would be hijacked and used as suicide bomb. It was really smart to choose planes as the ultimate weapon.
I will then look in to and discuss the various conspiracy theories that surround the question. Introduction When asked to think of a name associated to the word terrorism Osama bin Laden will spring to the front of many people’s minds. This is not surprising as he been the most influential and internationally recognised terrorist over the last few decades. At 10:30 AM on May the 1st 2011 the White House released a statement claiming bin Laden had been killed in an American operation in Pakistan. Many people all over the US and Europe celebrated at the news as they felt that justice had been done for the 9/11 attacks which killed so many innocent people.
