The United States was under a terrorist attack. On that Tuesday morning, 19 terrorists from the Islamist militant group al-Qaeda hijacked four passenger jets. Members of Al-Qaeda planned attacks upon the United States in New York City and the Washington, D.C. areas. The hijackers intentionally flew two of those planes, which were the American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 into the North and South towers of the World Trade Center that was located in New York City. Both towers collapsed within two hours and debris from the two towers
9/11 affected the health, financial markets and economy of the citizens of the United States. 9/11 took place on September 11, 2001. Three airplanes were hijacked by terrorist and used as weapons. Two of the planes hit the World Trade Center in New York City and 2,752 people died (September 11 Attacks). The other plane crashed into the Pentagon and killed 189 people.

American troops were told that their goal was to take the airfield of Iwo Jima for the future bombing of Tokyo. The Japanese were assigned to kill ten American soldiers before they had the right to die. The battle lasted from February 19, 1945 to March 26, 1945, which was a little over a month,. In thirty-six days there were nearly twenty-six thousand US casualties, almost seven thousand American troops were KIA (Hama, Erksine and Williams 98).

Bush went on vacation for eight months before 9/11, just living it up (Moore, 2004). On the morning of September 11, 2011 Bush was in Florida reading to children at an Elementary School. Suicide bombers seized three airliners and crashed them into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon in Washington, not to mention that two air crafts were unaccounted for with almost 156 people missing (Birmingham, 2001). A little before 9 a.m. the first strike on the World Trade Center occurred and CNN filmed the second strike (Birmingham, 2001). Bush was informed and in turn sat there for several minutes.
At 9:37 a.m. Flight 77 slammed into the west side of the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. killing the 64 on board and another 125 military and civilian personnel inside the building. Moments before the Pentagon was hit the President stated that the events in New York were an “apparent terrorist attack on our country (History.com, 2011).” At 9:59 a.m. the South Tower collapsed killing or trapping hundreds of people still inside. It only took 12 seconds for the tower to drop.
