Joe Marinaccio Mrs. McCarthy English 10 21 March, 2015 The Flag Raising at Iwo Jima World War II was one of the greatest and bloodiest wars in world history. When characterizing it, one normally thinks of Hitler’s domination and the Nazis. Although, that was a major part of the war, the war on the Pacific was as significant, yet unrecognized to the public today. The Great Depression was in full effect in the US when World War II began, giving many unemployed men a job in the army. This resulted in a surge of patriotism and national pride. Many were killed, many loved ones had died and many were mentally moved. The Flag Raising at Iwo Jima taken by Joe Rosenthal helped those people who lost and helped Americans get through this war. Memorial based on this picture was made and it was put into more museums than one could count. It was not only a picture to show the real war, but it served as a propaganda to the USA. Pictures can win awards not wars, but that is exactly what this picture did for the U.S in 1945. The U.S invaded Japan on February 19th of 1945 (The History Place, Sec. 6). This in fact was the first time the Japan had been attacked in its own country by another nation. It happened on an 8 square mile island that took the mane, Iwo Jima (Battle of Iwo Jima, par 1). American troops were told that their goal was to take the airfield of Iwo Jima for the future bombing of Tokyo. The Japanese were assigned to kill ten American soldiers before they had the right to die. The battle lasted from February 19, 1945 to March 26, 1945, which was a little over a month,. In thirty-six days there were nearly twenty-six thousand US casualties, almost seven thousand American troops were KIA (Hama, Erksine and Williams 98). 22,000 Japanese troops were sent to battle, with a result of only five hundred survivors.
