Why College Education Is Important to Me

Ever since I have known myself and understood the importance of a sound education, I always pushed myself to achieve the highest possible outcome, not just for me, but also for my children. Education to me plays a vital role in our everyday lives. I often question the importance of a degree, and furthering my education. One important answer to this question is more opportunity. The very notion of being better able to thrive in this slow paced economy thrills me, thus giving me the drive and motivation I need to succeed. As a young woman growing up in the Caribbean, opportunities are hard to come by because of social perceptions that help to keep a woman grounded in professional circles. It is by this condition, that I work even harder to attain a sound education that will aid in, not only the proper upbringing of my children, but also as a means by which I can comfortably earn a sufficient salary. Malcolm X said, “Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today”. There are various reasons as to why I would like to attain an education. It is not easy in my region, being a single mother and living on a basic salary. The aim of obtaining a better job and being able to be promoted are just a few reasons why I am passionate about excelling in the academic arena. As long as I can achieve this, then I will be more than able to earn a higher income, thus landing me in a better position to support myself and my children. There is much personal satisfaction to gain from earning a college degree. I will become more self-confident because I will be better educated, while progressing toward achieving a goal that only I can achieve for myself.
