The individuals are responsible because they are the ones obese and the only ones that can truly help themselves. “Let each of us take full responsibility for our diet and lifestyle” (Balko 523). The government is responsible because they are the leaders and thus, they should be obliged to help the people see the errors in their ways. The government “ought to be working to foster a personal sense of responsibility for our health and well-being” (Balko 522). The government should also “…be doing everything it can to create conditions that lead to healthy eating, support parents in raising healthy children, and make decisions in the interests of public health rather than private profit” (Brownell and Nestle 525).
Balko stated, “If policymakers want to fight obesity, they’ll halt the socialization of medicine, and move to return individual Americans’ ownership of their own health and well-being back to individual Americans. That means freeing insurance companies to reward healthy lifestyles, and penalize poor ones” (397-398). Balko shows that he supports the Americans taking responsibility of their own health than having the government intervene because it will eventually take away certain freedoms and liberties that other responsible Americans deserved. Balko shows two point views for those people who work hard and make good healthy decisions should enjoy the benefits of requiring less medical attention, and for those that make poor health decisions that result in obesity and requiring more medical helps should be responsible for it. This way, everybody is held to their own actions, which likely would cause people to make better choices in general, and not only regarding
At least in the health care battle, the administration can count some powerful corporate interests on its side — like the large segment of the Fortune 500 that has concluded the current system is unsustainable. That is hardly the case when it comes to challenging agribusiness. Cheap food is going to be popular as long as the social and environmental costs of that food are charged to the future. There’s lots of money to be made selling fast food and then treating the diseases that fast food causes. One of the leading products of the American food industry has become patients for the American health care industry.
Lyric Lederer Professor Moore English 1101-NET04 September 18, 2012 Unit 3-2 Summary Eric Schlosser promises to show us ‘The Dark Side of the All-American Meal; in his expose, Fast Food Nation, and he delivers. He hits us early in” Chapter 2, “Your Trusted Friends,” by exposing how the fast food industry, together with many corporations, grew to be such an over powering and influencing presence on the nation. The industry grew by using the methods of big business, starting with the assembly line type production methods, then by strategic and deceptive marketing. Schlosser wanted to show that the American public had a need for low cost food that could be delivered to the customer quickly and with no or very little preparation time. Fast food industries corporate greed took advantage of Americas need for cheap and readily available food.
Essay responding to the articles of Radly Balko and David Zinczenko In the reading “ Don`t blame the eater “ David Zinczenko talks about obesity, growing as a result of fast food eating and he argues about whose responsibility this is . Is it the food company`s responsibility for not providing accurate nutrition information, or is the costumer`s responsibility, especially teenagers, for eating fast food meals on a daily basis ? David Zinczenko relates himself to these kids by telling about his personal experience and how the separation of his parents affected his lifestyle by making fast food his only available option to get affordable meals. Another reason that makes people become more addicted to fast food, other than
They must take responsibility for their health and well-being, and stand up for what is right and necessary. There has to be balance between the two. For instance, in our reading by Radley Balko, “What You Eat Is Your Business,” he states that it is entirely up to an individual to make the right choices, and that too much government interference is contributing to the problem. He’s right, but not in the way he presents it. The government is interfering in exactly the wrong way, that is to say, they advocate for the very issues that makes America fat, such as allowing pharmaceutical companies to thrive off of our obesity related illnesses and allowing companies like Monsanto to poison our food and limit our options for healthy fruits and
Consumer’s are responsible for their selection in foods and if they chose to consue products that give no nutritional information that is on them. Zinczenko argues that lack of information given to the consumers about the food they are consuming is grounds to file lawsuits against the fast food vendors. Though there is truth to Mr. Zinczenko’s arguments, I disagree, with placing the blame on the fast food supplier’s. Consumer are responsible for . As far as healthier affordable alternatives, you pass just as many Subways, Jimmy Johns or Panera’s as you would a McDonalds.
Hate it hard. But don't blame McDonalds because you can't control your own life"(Klosterman). Klosterman nailed it with this point because people in the end make the choice to eat the food, or to not eat the food, simply put. Corporation and higher ranking business men could care less about the customers that enter and eat the food, only the money exiting their pocket and entering the McDonalds cash register. Yes, eating a whole new diet and getting away from fast food can be difficult, but Klosterman sums life up by saying "staying alive is hard", and it truly is with all the disease in the
However I believe we should be very reluctant in making private health care a part of our standards. For example, to open it up as completely private so much that a business owner can control the prices of our health requirements would be a bad situation to be a part of. However, with proper government regulations on price and a government oriented insurance company, between our job benefits and insurance premiums we would still have premier level health care availability, but at a more “premier” cost to the individual. As stated earlier, we should not expect added health care with no added cost to do so. Under our current delivery system, it is difficult for a private health clinic to survive, much like the Cambie Clinic in Vancouver is currently learning.
This reason has pushed the government to try controlling what the US population eats. The percentage of sick people is high in all of the categories. US News states that obesity is the number 2 cause of death. There should not be any reason for people to suffer from obesity. A lot of people don’t take care of their bodies, and that is considered to be an individual problem.
