Ryan Witt Doug Peterson ENC1101 December 5, 2014 The Soda Ban Act With portion sizes at chain-restaurants skyrocketing 457 percent over the last 20 years, it’s not hard to believe that in 2030 an estimated 42 percent of Americans will be obese. Statistics like this are what began the Soda Ban’s evolution. In the efforts to “help people help themselves by simply saying ‘No.’” as Nadia Arumugam would say, the soda ban restricts or puts a limit on the size drink Americans can purchase at most food franchises. However, will restricting the public of what they desire ultimately control the consumption of sugary beverages? The world can only advance through education, thus the Soda Ban’s restriction on sugary drinks contributed towards a
They could make laws that would protect the citizens from harmful diseases caused by unhealthy foods as well as saving money on healthcare to provide for the people that cannot afford to pay for the healthcare they need for the diseases. This is why the American Government should regulate the diets of Americans. One of the main reasons the Government should regulate diets is because of the overwhelming amount of people that are obese or over-weight, especially with the number of children that are having these problems and the parents are not doing anything about it. “Surgeon General Regina says with the Government interjecting and making some decisions on not what to eat, but how the food is made and how much they eat, America as a whole would start to become a more fit country” (Regina). Surgeon General Kooper also says, “Obesity is one of the most prevalent diet-related problems in the United States” (Kooper 277).
We have a crisis on our hands with childhood obesity on the rise. Two main causes for the fattening of our children are junk food and sugary sodas. Junk food and soda often take the place of healthy foods in our kids’ diets, something that most school systems should be ashamed of. School lunches are a cause of childhood obesity in America, at least in U-46 schools. In order to put an end to childhood obesity, the schools needs to prepare a healthy yet balanced diet for all kids, by serving them with good food that is full of nutrition.

When people eat junk food they are likely to die faster. If we go to fast food restaurants we are more likely to become obese. If government adds more tax people would spend less money.
Common Causes of Obesity According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases obesity is an abnormal accumulation of body fat, usually twenty percent over an individual’s ideal body weight, and about one third of the U.S population is obese. People who qualify as obese have a high percentage of body fat that in time puts their health at risk. “Obesity is associated with increased risk of illness, disability, and death” (Ford-Martin & Frey, 2005). Many adults survive on high calorie diets without knowing and do not find the time to exercise as much as they should, and obesity is the result of this behavior.
