Kenneth Swygert Mrs. Stewart Lit IV-1 April 5, 2014 The Right to Bear Arms Statistically, out of the top ten causes of death in the world, deaths caused by firearms does not even make the list. In fact, the only cause to make the list that did not involve natural deaths was automobile related accidents. There are roughly 32,000 deaths caused by firearms each year in the United States. This may seem like a large number, but take a moment to look at the percentages. Out of these 32,000, suicide accounts for 60% of all gun related deaths in the U.S. About 3% of gun related deaths are accidental. The remaining 34% accounts for homicide related deaths caused by firearms. That comes to about 11,000 gun related deaths per year, but out of these,…show more content…
So why should law abiding citizens who follow the guidelines set by the government have to suffer with those who would commit crimes regardless of what the law says? The right to bear arms is an inalienable right that no one, not even the government, has the right to infringe upon. This right allows the people to protect themselves from a government that has the ability to become tyrannical. The right to bear arms is an inalienable right set in place by the Second Amendment to give the people a means of protection from the government. During the year of 1840, Supreme Court Justice Joseph Story said, “One of the ordinary modes, by which tyrants accomplish their purposes without resistance, is, by disarming the people, and making it an offense to keep arms.” This statement rings true even to this day, though many in this country would fail to realize that in countries where it is an offense to keep arms…show more content…
This right allows protection to any and every person from all walks of life. The right to bear arms is an insurance policy of the people in case the government ever becomes unfit to lead the people that the people have the right to take them out of office and elect a new government. Many advocates of anti-gun policies contradict themselves with their reason or just don’t even propose a compelling argument. And of course there are always exceptions to every rule, but they must be approached in the appropriate manner. People must learn to hold the people who commit immoral acts responsible for them. As stated by the Declaration of the Continental Congress, July 1775, “Men trained in arms from their infancy, and animated by the love of liberty, will afford neither a cheap or easy conquest.” The founding fathers of this nation encouraged that it’s people be trained to use a firearm and this ideal should still hold true
