Hazim Evans Research Paper Ms. Bodnio 5/6/10 Recently in todays’ society gun control has become a very relevant topic on how to reform America’s gun laws and ways to control the gun industry. We live in a word today where media ecology influence has shaped our communication pattern in every action and behavior we present. The media shapes the conversation on gun control through many mediums and places a view on gun control which persuades us to agree or disagree leaving us not to not think for ourselves resulting in shaping our conversation on gun control. In this paper we will discuss how the ecology of the media influences our conversation of gun control for the better and for the worse. Also, how the multiple mediums have cost great
While it is true that guns are involved in thousands of deaths per year in the United States, there are things that lead to far more deaths than guns. According to Levitt, in 2009, 45,000 people died in autmobile related accidents and only 30,000 died in gun related incidents (151). Using the logic of those against gun rights, it’s the car’s fault not the driver’s fault that 45,000 people die every year. This is just an irrational attempt to shift reponsibility off of the people that actually cause these incidents. Another example that shows that guns aren’t so dangerous is that in any given year there is one drowning of a child for every 11,000 residential pools as compared to 1 death for every 1 million guns, or 175 children killed for the over 200 million guns owned in the U.S. (Levitt 150).
The inquiry chaired by Dame Janet Smith has determined that Harold Shipman unlawfully killed 215 patients, and in a further 45 there were reasons for being concerned about the true cause of death.1 A statistical analysis gives a figure of 236.2 The first definite killing was in March 1975; the last was in June 1998. On average, there were around 10 killings a year, but the number was highly variable. Between 1990 and 1993 he killed only 3 people, but in 1996 he killed at least 30, and in 1997 at least 37, a rate of one killing every ten days. Yet even then, no concerns were raised officially until a courageous doctor from a neighbouring practice, together with her partners, began to think the unthinkable. In March 1998, by which time he had already killed well over 200 people, a police investigation was begun—but quickly abandoned.
They are concerned that each step toward greater gun control will lead to the eventual confiscation of all firearms. Gun control opponent groups spend far more than gun control supporters on campaign contributions. Opponents of gun control, including the National Rifle Association, better known as the NRA, argue that the "right to bear arms" is guaranteed in the second amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America and licensing restrictions penalize law-abiding citizens while in no way preventing criminal use of handguns. As the National Rifle Association puts it, “Guns Don’t kill People—People Do.” It is also argued that by making it difficult for guns to be bought and registered for the American public there is a threat to the personal safety of American families
A Series of Unfortunate Events It has been almost a year since a mentally ill youth took the life of twenty innocent children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut. Last week, the latest news reported a military man, who went on a shooting rampage in Texas at Fort Hood. Other memorable tragedies such as the murders at the premiere of The Dark Knight Rises movie in Aurora, the Columbine high school massacre, or even the Virginia Tech massacre bring back to light a highly debated issue, guns and who should possess them. Despite these tragedies, deep division has kept new gun safety laws from passing in congress. A stricter mental and criminal background check system should be put in place before gun purchase to
Even with the current gun restrictions according to a study at John Hopkins research center “More than a quarter of all guns connected with the Bureau of Alcohol, tobacco, and Firearms investigations (crimes) of illegal gun trafficking.” There is no way that a ban of assault rifles is going stop the purchasing of such rifles. If there was such a ban in America that rivaled the U.K. than it could be assumed or projected that it would American prohibition all over again, and the law of prohibition was the most ignored law in American
In the gun control argument, I stand with the side that wants more gun control and less permission to carry a gun. There are many rules that I am against that are for guns, like to buy a gun you only get a background check and that’s it, I think you should get checked every year, and not only should they do a background check, they should also do a psychological test, and you should have to go to a course on guns and gun use every time you want to renew the license. There have been a lot of accidents around the country because of this issue of gun control, people are acquiring guns way too easily and are not using them properly, if you are buying a gun then like it should either be for hunting animals or for self-defense. They shouldn’t use them just because they don’t like the person or because of revenge or other stupid motives like those.
Guns have been around for a long time throughout history guns have played a major role. Our founding fathers used guns to defend and take over America. They have placed amendments in the constitution to ensure that we will always have guns. The liberals have been calling on taking away guns and making very strict gun control laws. Gun control doesn't work look at Chicago for instance they have some of the highest crime rates but yet they have some of the strictest gun laws.
The United States homicide rate in 25% higher when compared to murder rates in other high-income countries, therefore there is clearly something that other countries are doing that we are not. In Canada, for one to get a gun, he or she must have a license that takes 60 days to obtain. They also must take a gun training course, and then should pass a universal background check that focuses on mental, criminal and addiction history. In the United Kingdom, semi-automatic rifles, pump-action rifles, machine guns, and any firearm that has a barrel less than 30 centimeters in length are banned (Laville et al.). But most importantly, for us to adapt some of the laws that make our fellow high-income country’s homicide rate so low, the Congress needs to discuss this issue, without the interference of bribes or money, but by simply exploring the facts and the results of our gun
President Obama and His Vice, Joe Biden, added their voice for tougher gun laws to help stop mass shooting and everyday gun violence. These include, a renewal on the assault weapons ban , limiting high-capacity magazines, and expanding background checks for gun purchases as well as the new gun trafficking laws to help crack down on the spread of weapons across the country. President did personally promised to act without Congressional approval to increase the enforcement of existing gun laws and improve the flow of information among federal agencies to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and others who shouldn’t have them. Though many believe these proposals could help, others think this is not the only way to reduce gun violence among gangs, drug dealers and the mentally deranged. Rather Jonathan Stray thinks it is possible to address gun use instead of availability.
