Gun control has been a controversial issue in America for many decades, especially the debate concerning the most effective ways to reduce gun violence. We hear stories everyday of homicides, suicides, firearm accidents, and mass shootings resulting in more than 100,000 people being injured or killed per year. In the political arena, there are opposing views on the laws needed to reduce this gun violence epidemic. There is too much political arguing that causes Congressional gridlock, when what is important is to stop fighting each other and start fighting for the common good of the people. Many concerned citizens just want the political arguing to stop and to work together, not for political gain, but for the crucial purpose of saving lives.
Shaffer claims that not only will crime not decrease, but will grow resulting in more violence than ever. Publication of the poll, September, 4, showed that 59 percent of the individuals expressing an opinion favored restricting possession of hand guns, such as pistols and revolvers, to the police; only 35 percent of the respondents were opposed fifty-three percent favored making it unlawful to have a loaded gun in one’s home, and 85 percent approved rigid restraints on use of guns by teenagers. The author Shaffer then gets information from a recent Gallup poll found substantial majorities “definitely of a mind to place some kind of restriction on the use of guns” (13). As Shaffer claims, I as well agree on the statistics and her opinion that it would only make matters worst while others tend to think the opposite. In addition, Shaffer effectively defends her idea that banning handguns will have no effect on reduction of violent crime, but may actually increase instances of gun crimes.
Meanwhile in countries such as Austria, Norway, Sweden, Germany and France there are about 30 to 32 guns for every 100 people. When the founding fathers created the Second Amendment they meant for it to be a way for one to resist any form of oppressive government, not to defend yourself against any other individual. Over recent years, debate about whether or not the government should crack down on gun control policies has been a major topic among Americans. While some people strongly believe that stricter gun control laws will help prevent the many shootings and other crime related issues, there are others who say we should have the right to protect ourselves. I believe that guns are helpful tools that allow us to protect our families and freedoms, and that taking them away would only make the malicious criminals more comfortable in executing their acts on unarmed victims. Whether it’s a criminal in your neighborhood or a country invading, they would reconsider their thoughts if they suspected the people to be armed.
Our President, Barack Obama is one of the many. After a tragic massacre of 20 grade-school children in Newtown, Connecticut; President Obama remarked,“Something fundamental in American has to change.” The United States has as many firearms as it does inhabitants. While mortality rates from most major causes of injury have significantly declined, the number of annual firearm fatalities has not decreased. President Obama has a plan in place to reduce firearm violence. This plan includes (1) closing background check loopholes; (2) banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines; and (3) improving mental health services.
On the other hand, some people believe carrying guns is a not a civilian’s duty; therefore, only military, police-officers and other law enforcement entities should possess them. In his journal article “The Media Campaign Against Gun Ownership: Gun Control Will Not Reduce Gun Violence,” author Phyllis Schlafly states: Despite the claims made by its advocates, gun control will not reduce firearms violence. Supporters of gun controls propagate lies, including inaccurate statistics [that 12 children a day die from guns] on the number of children killed each day by guns and the assertion that access to guns at home leads to an increase in violence…The only way to reduce gun violence is to pass laws that give citizens the right to carry firearms. Criminals are less likely to commit violent acts if they believe their victims could be armed (Schlafly, P. 2001).
