Social media is one of the most used apps in personal phones and is pretty significant in our modern world. There are many professors with mixed feelings regarding social media. Some say it benefits your mental health, and others saying it can potentially cause depression. With this in mind, there are roughly 2.5 billion people that are using social media (ProCon, 2016). The negativity of social media has been well documented, comparing to the benefits. Such negativity like depression, envy, cyberbullying, suicidal, and so on. They could be right in some cases, but research has shown that it can be a distraction, also being a tool in our education. ProCon is one of the leading sources for pros & cons debates, suggests that the use of social media can actually be beneficial in education. The report on students using the web (social networking), says that 59% of the students with access, use it for educational topics, and 51% of the surveyed say that they use it for school assignments. By looking at it, the majority of the students stays on task and uses it as an essential tool. Not only that, a school in Portland, Oregon, administrator team decided to conduct an experiment on the students. They've introduced a social media program, to engage students to the open web. Surprisingly, after the opening of the program, the grades went up by 50% and chronic absenteeism reduced to roughly 33%. With the mental benefits, 20% of students were willing to do more work for extra credict. Seems like that the use of social media actually benefit your grade (tool) and motivates people (mental benefit, para 2). Also, ProCon provided a study published by Developmental Psychology.
