In our society today abortion is a sensitive issue. Most people try not to think about it. They wish to avoid the overwhelming horrible reality. Others debate over this controversial issue, each having their opposing viewpoints like the two sides of a medal. On one side, there is pro-choice and on the other is pro-life. After researching the topic, I have come to a conclusion that I support the pro-choice side of the issue. There are two questions that are basic to the entire abortion controversy. The first question is about choice and women’s rights. The second question is whether or not embryo is a human being. Many people are strong opponents of abortion, who believe that abortion is an intentional violent act of killing of the weakest and the most defenseless among us. There is undeniably some truth in that, and I totally respect this point of view. But, tragically, the lives of women are completely ignored by the pro-life activists. Pro-lifers believe that from the moment of conception, the embryo must be treated as a person. The ultimate justification of the pro-life position is religion. Abortion is against the Bible, and most religious people believe that an embryo is created by the action of God, therefore we have a moral obligation to preserve it. However, even given these objections, I believe that it is a living person who counts, not a mere potential of the embryo. There are situations where a mother’s body is not prepared for pregnancy, nor delivering a baby. If she feels that carrying the pregnancy is harmful to her health mentally or physically, she should have the choice of doing the abortion. Women must be in control of their own bodies and
