Abortion- A Woman’s Divine Right Tameka A. Severson SOC 120 Introduction to Ethics & Social Responsibility Instructor: Theodore Framan April 16, 2012 The topic of abortion is one of the most controversial of our times. The fight between pro-life and pro-choice supporters has been long and brutal. This is because individuals can be a bit “close minded” and refuse to view any other beliefs or ideas other than their own. Although I support the act of abortion, when it all boils down, it is a right and the circumstance at hand really depends on the particular individual. Abortion is defined as the termination of pregnancy by the removal or expulsion from the uterus of a fetus or embryo prior to viability.
The main argument for pro-life believers is that the unborn fetus is in fact a living thing and deserves the same rights that we are given as humans. The problem of abortion will always be an issue. But there are ways that we can significantly lower the abortion numbers. I believe that the most effective solution to this problem is an obvious one. If the United States government made
The woman may feel guilt, anger, anxiety, depression, and even suicidal thoughts may occur after the woman has an abortion. Physical side effects can include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and/or spotting and bleeding. More serious physical side effects that may occur include infection, heavy bleeding, damage to the cervix, scarring of the uterine lining, damage to other organs, and even death. In some cases, infertility can occur causing the woman to not be able to have a child later in life (Susquehanna Valley Pregnancy
Thomson explains that the fetus is a person who has the right to life. However, when the mother’s life is at risk, the idea of abortion can be considered morally permissible. In this scenario abortion is permissible due to the fact that we all have the right to protect our lives from any danger. This is what we call self-defense. Nevertheless, this is not the right term to justify this action, since there is no valid self-defense against someone who is innocent and unwilling to cause any harm.
Also because abortions are legal then stem cell research should be made legal because if a fetus is already killed then it can still be put to good scientific research and possibly help another human being. Having the topics legal would also keep many Americans from performing these procedures illegally. Pro Choice has many positives to it. The ninth amendment states:
Despite Natural Law forbidding abortion, there is a doctrine of double effect that can be implemented. If the mother’s life is threatened as a result of the pregnancy, for instance during an ectopic pregnancy, then the destruction of the fallopian tube would be acceptable. Here, the primary aim is not the terminate the pregnancy but to save the mother’s life. The secondary effect is that the embryo is destroyed. Here, abortion would be permissible even by Natural law followers, who believe in the sanctity of life.
On the other hand some people argued that late-term abortion should not be banned because it is necessary to terminate a fetus when the life of the woman is in danger as a result of complicated pregnancy; or when pregnancy result from incest or rape and the woman may be late in finding out that she is pregnant. Late-term abortion is also favored when the fetus genetic defect,
Reviewing this article did not change my mind on abortion. Abortion is still an abortion even if it is done quietly by a pill. Overall, I still choose pro-life over pro-choice after reading these articles. I believe a fetus should have the same rights as anyone else and should have the chance to experience life itself. These articles gave me a better understanding on how abortion is today and how it will be in the future.
Many people believe it is cruel, merciless, and inhumane, but every woman should have the choice and right to have an abortion if she pleases. There are many circumstances that can arise and put women in predicaments where turning to abortion seems to be the only way out. The United States Supreme Court, in the well-known
You might decide a few key elements of the pro-life decisions are worthwhile, such as preserving the safety of the mother and unborn child. Your religion could also take precedence over abortions. As for myself I am undecided. Personally if I had to make the decision to keep a child that I created unintentionally I would fight for pro-life, and love the child unconditionally. Although if I were to be asked by a friend or a random person what choice should be made I would have to consider their situation.
