Being an educated or skilled immigrant would most likely mean that the steps to naturalization, as in the mandatory costs and testing, would be less of a challenge to fulfill. In Chapter four of the text Racial and Ethnic Groups (REG), it states that “The brain drain is the immigration to the United States of skilled workers, professionals, and technicians who are desperately needed by their home countries.”(REG, chapter four, p. 103) This would cause some reluctance in my decision to migrate to America from China. The fact that I would be possibly taking away something that benefits my native country could cause some second thought. This may not be a major factor if the political system in China had a negative effect on my economic advancement. The same could be said if I was looking for an education in America and eventually decided to stay instead of returning to China because of the lack of opportunity for growth.
Brian Friel’s The Freedom of the City Year 11 English Research Task Name: Due Date: Find and copy a map that shows the lands of Ireland and Britain. Where is Ireland in relation to Britain? Ireland is on Britain’s right and they are very close to each other. The Partition was the act that divided Ireland into North and South. When did this happen and why did it happen?
According to publications, “Modern Irish are chiefly descended from the Celts and constitute 87.4 percent of the population. Other whites, mainly descended from the Anglo-Normans, make up another 7.5 percent of the population. The remaining proportion, which has largely immigrated to the island in the past two decades, is composed of 1.3 percent Asian, 1.1 percent black, 1.1 percent mixed, and 1.6 percent unspecified” (Press). The structure of education within Ireland bares little resemblance to the educational structure present within the United States. Education for Irish citizens between the ages of 6 and 16 is mandatory, and students are expected to complete three years of secondary school, which is equivalent to high school, before education becomes optional.
There are now more than 322 languages spoken in the United States (U.S. Census, 2000). ). As of 2010 thirty states have adopted Official English laws. If the U.S. passed the Official English laws in all states than it would become necessary for the government to provide information and services in English only and does
In American Son by Brian Ascalon Roley Tomas and Gabe, who are two half Filipino-half German brothers, try to pass as different ethnicities than their own: Tomas as Mexican and Gabe as White; they do this is because they are ashamed of being Asian and believe that being White or Mexican is superior and empowering. In American Son, white privilege is enjoyed by Tomas’ and Gabe’s Aunt Jessica when she and Ika meet Stone. In this scene Jessica does not initially regard her sister in law as an important part of the group. In this regard, Gabe states that “Aunt Jessica does not introduce Mom to the driver” (122). White privilege, as Kendall Clark states is a concept that “should be defined carefully” (5) since there is controversy around it.
What does it mean, then, to say that ethnic identities are socially constructed? It is important to understand the claim to be that social categories, their membership rules, content,
According to the article 8 of the Ireland Constitution (1922): “1. Because Irish is the national language, it is the main official language. 2. English is accepted as another official language.” From this, it can be observed that both, Irish and English, play a fundamental role in the Irish community. Although, Irish is the national language, the 99% of the Irish population speaks English has their native language, without leaving aside, that the ones who speaks Irish have a special status.
