Water Pollutants Essence Gordon Week 11 Individual Work Instructor: Sanhita Abrol Questions * What are the main pollutants found in water? * Why is human waste a main culprit in water pollution, especially in third world countries? * Discuss an example of a pathogen found in water from human feces: * What is the organism, how does it infect humans, what are the symptoms and treatments? * How can these human feces pollutants stay out of water supplies? Water pollutants come from a host of human activities and surface water or groundwater through diverse host of pathways. There are three types of water pollution. These pollutions are categorized to understand treatment options or preventions. The three types are: 1. Biological Pollutants: Bacteria, viruses , and parasites 2. Chemical Pollutants: Mercury from mining or various acids 3. Physical Pollutants: Sediment and heat Out of the three types I feel they all can be deadly and they are major problem in our world. Pathogens are the most serious, widespread water pollutants. These infectious agents may cause sickness and death. Pathogens include many types of viruses, bacteria parasites, and other organisms. Sounds familiar, yes, biological pollutants. Many pathogens are spread through drinking water and many other ways. This causes water pollutants everywhere and even a bigger problem in third world countries. Third world countries have problems with human waste being the main culprit in water pollution. It’s estimated to cause more than 3 million deaths annually in third world countries. There are many reasons behind this problem. These third world countries deals with issues like sanitation facilities and inadequate drinking water, floods and siltation of river systems.
