Waste Management 457 Assignment #6 1. What are the most important components of a landfill? The most important components of a landfill are the cover and the bottom liner. These two components form the water tightness of the site which prevents the leachate from escaping and reducing the potential of negatively impacting human health and the environment. 2. Define the following terms: geomembranes, geotextiles, geogrids and geonets. Geomembranes: Also know as polymeric membranes or flexible membrane liners. Widely used in both cover and bottom liners they are composed of synthetic plastic and rubber sheets that are joined in situ using solvents, adhesives, or welding to form a continuous barrier. Geotextiles Synthetic fiber textile which are porous and flexible. Used to separate materials of different size such as between sand and stone layers or as reinforcement. Geogrids Plastic with large open grid like structures used in reinforcement. Geonets Parallel sets of polymeric ribs. Provide drainage for fluids by allowing liquid to flow within the open spaces. 3. Why are clay materials often used as liners or cover material? Clay materials are often used as liners and cover material because their natural composition – low permeability due to their low hydraulic conductivity and natural with the ability to adsorb contaminants thus reducing their toxicity. 4. Waste Treatment is an important concept in waste disposal – what are the three basic principals of waste treatment? The three basic principles of waste treatment are detoxification, volume reduction and isolation of waste material from the environment. Detoxification changes the chemistry or destroys certain chemical compounds which could cause harm. Volume reduction uses the available treatment methods to reduce the waste that reaches the
