This includes recurrent physical, psychological, verbal harassments or any other form of intimidation aimed towards a victim who is not able to defend themselves because of being outnumbered, size, power, strength and psychological flexibility of their opponents. Bullying can provoke shooting in schools. Most bullies come from harsh surroundings, for example being bullied at home, physical discipline and lack of monitoring by parents. Many bullies tend to carry weapons and may indulge in drugs and alcohol at an early age.

Studies show that areas where alcohol is more accessible have a high rate of street and domestic violence. The most violent crimes committed are alcohol related. Alcohol abuse has been linked to the growing rate of child neglect and abuse, people taking time off from work, and trouble with the law. The misuse of alcohol claims the lives of many Australian men and women. A study conducted in 2004 showed that 3,100 people die each year and 72, 000 are hospitalized due to alcohol.
The news is the primary source of information for 2/3 of Americans, but how many Americans realize that most of the time the headlines are that of a violent act? Some type of rape or act of terrorism or murder or animals attacking something is the normal headlines on local and national news stations. Even with crime rates being at a 30 year all time low people are still buying hand guns and when asked the average person will say they think crime is worse than it was the year before. “Mean World Syndrome” can also have effects on ethnic groups; rarely do humans socialize with other humans outside of their ethnic groups. Television often portrays certain ethnic groups to stereo typical genres, for example Latinos are normally seen as the most violent group and the Arabs and Muslims are normally seen as the terrorist types.
There is several important news that needs to be heard and seen, but the TV news wants to bring in more audiences. In other words, the TV news would rather talk about cliché or useless topics instead of talking about the crucial events that had occurred, just for high ratings. Much of this can be attributed to the effect of the media (to be addressed more later on); violence has pervaded our culture and become almost background noise. At any one time, 3 out of the most watched 5 television shows are crime-related (Eller). Americans have an unusual fascination with crime unparalleled in other cultures. All of these factors combined creates a strong unease with those around us and causes people to keep their distance from those even in regular close proximity to
