Upward Mobility In America, many people deny the existence of social class and the importance of that to them. Although, we see the fact that people do not accept the idea of social class, still most of them acknowledge the differences in prosperity, influence, and prestige between people. In this essay, I identify my social class in 3 areas that I believe social class exists. Second paragraph I explore my possibilities to alter between classes with those 3 areas in my life. Finally, I explain the way popular culture influence both class and mobility in those 3 areas. I support my theories with citation from course resources and other reliable sources, as well using my social class to back up my theory. I grew up in a working class family. Both my parents did not graduate high-school and got married early in life. I worked in many part time jobs while I was in school, so I can become more financial independent later in life. Now days I categorize myself in middle class, at my home, with my friends and my career life. At home, my social class considers being middle class. My husband is holding a higher degree, and it gives our kids sense of importance things in life. We give our kids responsibilities at home and make them part of our small social group. We try to show our kids that education can alter their life in many ways. In one of the articles in the family and society magazine, there was a discussion about “Concerted cultivation”, a concept that Lareau has used to describe the parenting practices of middle-class parents and the way they organized, established and controlled activities. Lareau also mentioned that the idea behind it was to provide and make sure their children have positive social and cultural experiences” (2011).
