Having visual aids and symbols as someone's preferred method of communication can break down the communication barrier by allowing the staff to understand the individual. A strength of having visual aids and symbols is that it allows for the individuals to be able to communicate with other people and have them be understood. However a weakness could be that their visual aids could be lost or that they are not been understood by the person they are trying to communicate with. Learning sign language and/or makaton can be beneficial to someone with additional needs as it may be the only way that the individual can communicate with other people. A strength of this will be that the individual will be able to communicate with other people and get their needs across and get help if they are needing it.
Cochlear Implant A cochlear implant is a small device that provides direct electrical stimulation to the auditory (hearing) nerve in the inner ear. It was developed to help children and adults with a severe to profound hearing loss who cannot be helped with hearing aids may be helped with cochlear implants. This type of hearing loss is called ‘sensorineural,’ which means there is damage to the tiny hair cells in the part of the inner ear called the cochlea. Because of this damage, sound cannot reach the auditory nerve. With a cochlear implant, the damaged hair cells are bypassed, and the auditory nerve is stimulated directly.
Support individuals in reducing substance use 4.4 - describe how to manage your own feelings about the individual's progress or lack of this in such a way as to minimise their impact on the support provided. Different conditions may require varying approaches to support self-management. When supporting individuals who are reducing or trying to stop their substance use we need to firstly, remind ourselves that all people are capable of change and possess personal strength and abilities. These safeguards provide a means for a representative of the person with dementia to challenge a decision or choice that has been made and is not in their best interests. 2.3 It is important not to assume that an individual with dementia cannot make their own decisions because people with dementia lose capacity over time and the rate at which a person's condition deteriorates varies from individual to individual. With earlier diagnosis and new treatments, people are retaining capacity for longer. Individuals should be supported in making their own decisions about their care and day to day life for as long as possible and support is available for people with dementia to plan ahead because it enables them to have a say in their future care and
In this scenario it is important that you use their preferred method of communication. This can be sign language, makaton, or any other type of method that will ensure both you and the service user know what is being said. If you do not have the right equipment in the setting to help communication be effective, the service user may feel discriminated against as you are not providing for their needs. In health and social care settings, it is important that you provide equipment for everyone so that no one feels discriminated against. Another step to respecting another culture is by realizing that your culture is not necessarily the “right” one. Try to take a step back and look at the culture in an observational point of view, instead of your own personal point of view. This could really help you understand the culture, and the more we understand, the more we respect. When you learn about a culture, your
