Students deserve to feel safe at school, however when they experience bullying, the effects can last long into their future. Some of these effects include: Depression, low self-esteem, health problems, poor grades and suicidal thoughts. Bullying causes both short and long term damage related to these effects. Not only are these issues the children have to deal with they also deal with physical problem obvious bruises or wounds from harassment, sleep disruptions, bed wetting, psychosomatic aches. Social Difficulty can lead to inapropreate social skills, social isolation, inaccurate social perceptions.
The probability of encountering an abused child is very likely in the education field which makes it imperative for educators to educate themselves and their students on the topic of abuse. “The seven dimensions of children’s well-being are: health, education, identity, family and social relationships, emotional and behavioral development, self presentation and self care skills” (Stevenson, 2005). When either of these dimensions is negatively altered it is considered child abuse or neglect. A child who is noticeably malnourished is a major indicator in child abuse cases. Another major indication to child abuse or neglect is the child’s education.
Another way to collect data is to talk to the parents of the students when they arrive to pick up their kids or in the school meeting for parents, then the teacher can inquire if the student is also showing behavioral problems at home or if the problems only occur in the academic context. Collecting and reviewing data before implementing specific interventions is extremely important because it prevents overreactions and personal bias of the teacher. An intervention needs to be grounded on enough evidence that there is a behavioral problem and that it is not a singularity. Then the teacher can use the records to support his intervention. Common Behaviors in Young Children Three of the most common behaviors in young children that the teacher might consider for modification or replacement include: Talking to friends or doing activities when the teacher is asking to pay attention.
This writing is intended for parents. There are many reasons why a child may not be experiencing success in school. Often times students may be viewed as not succeeding because of their behavior, lack of effort, not attending classes. Although these could very well be legitimate reasons there may be another cause. In all actuality they may have a learning disability that has not been detected.
Despite the disagreements, strict disciplinary actions need to be enforced in schools to avoid bullying; because, it disrupts the learning environment, causes future disadvantages, and makes the victims become emotionally unstable. To begin with, not having strict disciplinary actions enforced in schools causes bullying to disrupt the learning environment. For example, victims of bullying find it impossible to concentrate in class while their bully is distracting them: This shows that not having strict disciplinary actions enforced in school could make many victims of bullying adapt school phobia. Additionally, fights in school that both the bully, and victim engages in diverts both of them from their learning process; this demonstrates, not having strict disciplinary actions in school is not only disruptive, but also dangerous. Lastly, constant fights, suspensions, or lack of the ability to cooperate in school with other students, makes it hard for bullies to apply for other schools due to their behavioral issues.
Running head: Influences in the Teaching Environment Influences in the Teaching Environment Joe Smith Grand Canyon University: EDU 536 August 28, 2012 Influences in the Teaching Environment There are many negative classroom conditions and disruptive behaviors that can influence the teaching environment. These include, but are not limited to, large class sizes, unmotivated and disrespectful students. It is important for teachers to be prepared for these conditions and behaviors, and have effective strategies to deal with them. These strategies need to include preemptive tactics that prevent disruptions from happening. However, some disruptions are unpreventable and inevitable and strategies need to been in place to deal with these when they occur.
Another explanation would be that depressed students experience difficulty thinking, concentrating and remembering. This will affect the individual’s performance in class as well as independently which will result in a poor overall academic performance. One of the major factors affecting students’ grades would be stress, a symptom of depression as well as a trigger for depression. Students under a considerable amount of emotional stress underperform in school because stress weakens executive function. Taking into account the effect of depression associated with attendance, ability to concentrate, and stress it can be concluded that if an adolescent is suffering from depression, then he or she will display a decline in academic performance.
Student behavior and Drug activity really affects the school system in a major way because children who misbehave in school aren’t on track and they always disturb or distract other students inside the educational environment. “Many children display inappropriate or problem behaviors in the classroom which can make it difficult for them to learn, cause harm to the child or others and isolate the child from his or her peers (New York University School of Medicine).”So when students misbehave it may cause them to lack in learning and can cause them to fail classes, and whatever behavior the student is displaying may hurt the child or other students inside the classroom or the child may be banned from class activities or lessons because of his or her behavior. Student behavior and drug activity is a major problem effecting the educational process in the school system because more students are misbehaving and getting involved in drugactivity which contributes to their bad grades. To narrow down misbehavior and prevent drug activity, more strict punishment policies should be enforced such as televising classrooms, mandatory pat downs, school drug tests, etc., and students should be given correctional classes such as behavioral rehab, also better security placement in school and around the schools perimeter. “Children’s high school behavior is dependent upon many factors, including how well they do academically, what their home life is like and what discipline they are used to(eHow driven by Demand Media).” Some students misbehave and may display harmful behavior verbally and physically because their upset about the things that are going on in their household and having to think about it while in school is very disturbing because students are too focused on the outside situations rather than focusing on their school work and how to behave in a classroom.
Through observation, we can learn what the child can do, what the child likes or dislikes, how the child behaves under various circumstances and how the child interacts with people. Collecting data and measuring student behavior in a formal manner is an especially important aspect of effective teaching for the following reasons: Identifying Current Level of Performance Observing behavior helps to pinpoint where the child currently is on instructional objectives. Teachers often measure children's behavior before they provide instruction. This is called baseline data. Baseline data helps the teacher decide how far the child is from where he or she should be.
Effective Disciplining in Public High Schools: How to Deal with Students Considered to be Constant Trouble Makers Name: Institution: Disciplining students in public high school is one of the main challenging issues facing teachers and school administrators around the world. High school students engage in disruptive behaviors such as tardiness, physical and verbal attacks, substance abuse, stalking and intimidation. These behaviors if not rectified escalate to intolerable and dangerous levels that affect the performance of an individual at school. This paper discusses some strategies which public school should use to improve behavior among students who cause trouble. First, it is imperative that teachers should understand the cause of student’s behavior.
