Outline some of the ways in which cultural deprivation may lead to the educational underachievement of working class pupils (12 marks) Cultural deprivation is the idea that the culture of low income groups is deprived or deficient in certain aspects which accounts for low educational achievement. Educational underachievement is when pupils fail to reach their full potential and meet their aspired grades. This essay will outline some of the ways in which cultural deprivation can lead to the educational underachievement of working class pupils. One way in which cultural deprivation may lead to educational underachievement is due to the lack of intellectual stimulation that working class parents have on their children. It has been found that working class parents are less likely to give their children educational toys or read to them.
Students who drop out often have many factors that influence their decision. Research shows that key factors for students who are at highest risk of dropping out are: poor grades in core classes, low or poor attendance, failure to be promoted to the next grade, disengagement in the classroom, and behavioral problems (Kennelly, 2007). Student boredom, lack of challenging material, and disengagement due to lack of academic rigor have also been identified as indicators of academic failure. In recent years; the legislation of No Child Left Behind Act has contributed to a situation in which educators are caught between a rock and a hard place. Knowing that students are a greater risk of dropping out when they perform poorly in school, yet increased rigor in the classroom as a strategy to decrease the dropout rate, as identified in the No Child Left Behind Act has created a “Catch-22” situation for educators (Bridgeland J. D., 2009).

Failing a course is a major set back for some people. When students have the opportunity to retake a course most do not because they feel like it is a waste of time, or they just get lazy and do not want to do it at all. Also, failing a course can also be embarrassing to some people which leads them to give up and not worry about the course. Personal problems that occur within the household can also be a major factor on why teens drop out of high school. Some personal problems that can cause drop outs are pregnancies, marriage, and ect.

Another factor is developmental delay this includes delays in physical, cognitive, social, emotional or behavioral development. College students are also dealing with peer pressure and this is another reason why they drop out.
Are Co-ed Schools bad for students’ self-esteem? Studies such as in “The Effects Of Single Gender Schools On Boys’ Self-Esteem And Academic Confidence” by Nichols G. Morgan “ Boys in Mixed gender schools experiencing constant failure will continue a downward spiral of self-esteem and academic performance.” In a study conducted by James A. McGruder, “Comparison of Academic Performance and Self-Esteem Levels in Female Adolescents Attending Single Gender and Coeducational Public Schools,” “…[A]dolescent girls attending coeducational schools are at a disadvantage in terms of developing positive self-esteem and academic achievement. Researches proposed that coeducational schools have difficulty providing a ‘comfortable’ learning environment for adolescent girls. Some researches also observed that adolescent girls attending coeducational schools often do not receive a through and comprehensive education.” Single gender schools would be a better environment for both girls and boys. They would benefit from being in a learning state where they don’t have to be inferior to the opposite sex in a specific subject because that is the stereotype.
Drug abuse is extremely destructive to a student’s education, health, and finances. Students who abuse drugs may believe that the only effects of using occur while they are high. They do not think about the long term effects drugs may have on his/her education. In his article Duerte says, “Drug abuse leads to higher rates of truancy, school failure and dropouts” (Duarte 90). The effects are not only with issues leading to dropouts but also with general, everyday occurrences in college life such as study habits.
