Does Depression Have a Negative Effect on Youth’s Education? HSB 4U Submitted by: Cassy Hunt Submitted to: Mr. Petruniak November 24, 2014 In a world of increasing stress, how does depression shape the future through adolescents? Depression has a significant impact on an individual’s ability to perform life activities, which includes school. Today, approximately 5% of male youth and 12% of female youth, age 12 to 19, have experienced a major depressive episode.(CMHA 2104) The symptoms of depression may strain the academic performance of adolescents. Some may argue that depression has no effect on grades in today’s youth; however, there is data to prove this statement false. For one, depression can cause social withdrawal in which the individual will pull away from friends and avoid school. This leads to inconsistent attendance which concludes to faltering grades. Another explanation would be that depressed students experience difficulty thinking, concentrating and remembering. This will affect the individual’s performance in class as well as independently which will result in a poor overall academic performance. One of the major factors affecting students’ grades would be stress, a symptom of depression as well as a trigger for depression. Students under a considerable amount of emotional stress underperform in school because stress weakens executive function. Taking into account the effect of depression associated with attendance, ability to concentrate, and stress it can be concluded that if an adolescent is suffering from depression, then he or she will display a decline in academic performance. Attendance is a major factor, linked to depression, when examining academic success. Students suffering from depression may experience social withdrawal.
