Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is when a person goes through a series of very life altering experiences or events that could not have been controlled by that person themselves. (pg. 109. Huffman, 2012) A couple of examples would be like some veterans who come back home from a war, someone witnessing a murder, someone enduring emotional, physical or sexual abuse for a long period of time or someone’s life being threatened by another person. In any case, there is nothing positive or good about this; some symptoms of this disorder are recurring nightmares, flashbacks, blackouts, an unexplainable fear of something just by the sight of it, extreme anxiety, mood swings, agitation, feeling angry about things…show more content…
Their hypothesis is that someone who doesn’t really know what they believe in, when it comes to spirituality, then they have an advantage to not having to deal with a trauma in their lives while also trying to figure out, if the trauma is death, where that loved one or significant other might or is going. While, someone who might have had some assurance about their beliefs might second guess their spirituality because of the trauma. (Park, 2005) What they had done is taken first year college students that had dealt with a death of a loved one or a car accident and noticed that even when some of them had a belief, it only worsened the PTSD as well as the ones who had no belief or had not thought about any beliefs before the time of the said trauma. (Bryant & Astin, 2008) Only part of their hypothesis was concluded as incorrect and because of the levels of stress that the students had experienced not only triggered PTSD, but because of the questioning of their own spirituality, it added more stress to their lives, then concluding that trying to figure out some sort of spirituality at a time of a recent trauma does not help someone to cope, rather it worsens it due to the stresses. Now, someone who believed had their spirituality “in check” showed lower levels of stress, but even so, it was still significant enough to trigger PTSD.
