The BSN education offers a more in depth study in the knowledge of nursing diagnosis and implementation of the nursing process. The BSN is also more research driven. They look for more evidenced based practice to steer in the decision making process. The BSN furthers the studies learned in the AND program. It expands on community health, management, and critical thinking skills.
Increasing Register Nurse-BSN Enrollments: Facilitating Articulation through Curriculum Reform Sheryl Quinn University of Detroit Mercy Increasing RN-BSN Enrollments: Facilitating Articulation through Curriculum Reform Introduction People often think of a nursing career as a way to help clients in a meaningful way. Having a Bachelor’s Degree in nursing allows the nurse to practice in many levels of nursing and also a stepping stone for higher education that helps to specialize in many exciting fields of client care. Increasing enrollment in nursing programs is one method to deal with the shortage of nurses. The need to increase the number of nurses educated at the baccalaureate (BSN) level is very significant. The viable way to increase the volume of BSN graduate is to promote state wide and mandated articulation agreements and create an environment where academic progression is facilitated.
A BSN trained nurse is prepared for leadership roles in the healthcare field, either as a clinical leader/manager or as a research assistant. Furthermore the BSN prepares the nurse for the challenges ahead with an aging population and changes in the healthcare industry as a whole. It is also statistically shown that nurses prepared at the BSN level have better patient outcomes and lower mortality rates The BSN serves to “create more highly educated nursing workforce in the interest of improving patient safety and providing enhanced nursing care” (Rosseter 2012.) The patients receive the best care possible when the nursing workforce is trained at a higher level. Human
Nursing is a profession and lifelong learning to meet the health needs, and into the future. Transforming education: The IOM report indicates that nursing education should serve as a platform for continued lifelong learning and include opportunity for seamless transition into higher education (IOM 2011). Report encourages states board of nursing and nursing governing bodies to take actions to support nurses in the completion of a transition to practice program (nurse residency). Nurse residency program provide new nurses with hands on educational training not received in school. Nurses must achieve higher levels of education and utilize this education to meet challenges facing health care. An associate degree is great; however a
Although the first years of a baccalaureate program are similar to that of an associate degree program, additional in-depth coursework such as social sciences, nursing research, public and community health, nursing management, leadership and critical thinking are required, thus enhancing a BSN’s professional development, knowledge base and scope of practice. A BSN program focuses on treating patients as individuals by incorporating the metaparadigm theories of nursing, allowing for a higher level of preparation to care for more complex patients. A BSN is trained and prepared to treat each patient holistically; assessing, evaluating and analyzing all needs (physical, emotional, environmental) of the patient. Although an associate-level degree nurse has some limited knowledge of theory and conceptual models, their training primarily focuses on technical skill and task orientation. The ADN has a disadvantage when it comes to the concepts of health, environment, person and nursing as well as evidenced based practice.
Nurses should get effective workforce planning to get more data and information. 4. Nurses should practice and get higher level of education and training. The nursing education primary goal is patient safety. “Two consensus reports from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) which calls for greater interprofessional education of physicians, nurses, and other health professionals, as well as new methods of improving and demonstrating competency throughout one’s career (IOM, 2003b, 2009)” The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation of nursing research network is estimate costs of nursing education for different degree levels.
As “nursing is based upon a body of knowledge that is always changing with new discoveries and innovation” Potter and Perry (2005), nursing profession need to improve from its old fashioned bedside nursing. Report by IOM about future of nursing 2010 indicates need for “more highly educated, diverse nursing workforce”. In US one can become a professional Registered Nurse (RN) by studying Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or studying Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN, Bachelor of science in Nursing). Both degree gives eligibility to take NCLEX examination and to get license to practice as a professional Registered Nurse. A long standing discussion is in progress about the differences in competencies of BSN and ADN nurses.
The call to form the primary care workers, including advanced practice registered nurses, especially nurse practitioners. The call to build the primary care workforce, will increase as access to coverage, service settings, and services will increase under ACA. Nurses are good in assisting transition from hospital to home, preventing medication error and reducing rates of infection. In short the product of the report if followed, would rise the number of nurse practitioners and doctorate level nurses to deliver health care treatment for some patient who are looking for treatment and are unable to find a health care provider ready to take
A Vision for the Future Melanie Reynolds NUR/391 June 13, 2011 Patricia DeBruin Health Care and Nursing Today The health care system today is facing many challenges and opening many doors for opportunity and growth that will directly influence the nursing profession and more important the delivery of patient care. The expanding roles of nurses, the influence of evidenced-based practice, the importance of research and the trends in health care are directing the nursing profession toward a powerful evolution into a future of opportunity. The days of Florence Nightingale have long passed, but the example that she set for attending to the needs of patients is emerging to a higher standard today. Healthcare today is demanding nurses to keep up with and transform the nursing practice to meet the demands emerging today in health care. Influence of Evidence-Based Practice Evidence-based practice developed to facilitate a higher quality of care and the best patient outcomes.
