Tragedy and Triumphs of Domestic Violence Jennifer COM 220 Research Writing August 22, 2010 Richard Franchetti We are all aware of the many forms of domestic abuse across the world. Many of us don’t realize that men are abused equally as much as women because hear only about women who are physically abused. Other forms of abuse include mental/emotional, economical, sexual, verbal, and isolation. Statistics show that there is some form of domestic abuse or domestic violence occurring in one out of two marriages or partnerships and about 90% of children are in a nearby room causing them to suffer from emotional and or behavioral problems. Studies show this causes the cycle of domestic violence to continue throughout their adult lives. It has been said, one in every four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime. An estimated 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner each year, 85% of domestic violence victims are women. Historically, females have been most often victimized by someone he or she knew. Females who are 20-24 years of age are at the greatest risk of nonfatal intimate partner violence. Most cases of domestic violence are never reported to the police (ncadv). Regardless of geographic location, race, age, or economic status, domestic violence surrounds us. Forms of domestic violence can include physical violence, sexual violence, economic control, and psychological assault (including attacks against property or pets, and intimidation, emotional abuse, isolation and the use of children as a means of control).
