The carpet under my feet felt coarse, rough, and smooth all at the same time like I was standing on mixture of gravel and marbles. I knelt on the floor near the railing of the stairs so I could watch my mother talk to the man.

Our main goal as a volunteer was to speak to the patients, ask them about their day and ask if they would like to play any games or want any newspapers to read. At my first day with friendly visiting, I was at the front desk waiting for further instructions on where and what patients to see and avoid. As I stood waiting, a fairly old man sat across from me tied up. The nurse came and gave him food and he threw the plate across the room.
