Joshua Klann Professor McLane Eng. 111 12 February 2015 Exposed to Emotions My young mind was still able to sense the subtle panic in the voice that was speaking to me. The voice was calm but the hint of urgency was overwhelming. I could almost feel his long, deep exaggerated breathing on my cheek that made the hair on my neck stand stiff. The words reached my ear in as if he was speaking in bubble letters, changing his tone with each syllable. I could picture the Cheshire cat from Alice in Wonderland blowing smoke through the phone creating words right in front of my face. The mood it created was horrifying. I moistened my lips and could taste the salty sweat beads that were starting to form on my face. This is an account of a young boy witnessing his mother’s reactions to an undesirable and life changing family tragedy. I rushed down to my mother who was sitting in the living room, unbeknownst of the mysterious person on the phone. I reached out to give her the phone, it nearly slipped out of my grasp from the combination of my sweaty hands and the uncontrollable shakes that had come over me. Everything in the room was blurred and unfocused. Only my mother’s body was perfectly visible. I shook my head, hoping to wake up in my bed from this terrible nightmare. The carpet under my feet felt coarse, rough, and smooth all at the same time like I was standing on mixture of gravel and marbles. I ran upstairs trying my best to control my legs that had seemingly left my body the instant I answered the phone. I knelt on the floor near the railing of the stairs so I could watch my mother talk to the man. My eyes began to wonder around the house. The light from the television set casted shadows around the doors and all of the fixtures around the walls. Everything looked like one of those creepy houses that you can walk through at a carnival.
