Themes of Romeo & Juliet Love Love is a theme in “Romeo and Juliet” because Romeo and Juliet are the most famous lovers in history. Romeo starts the play infatuated with Rosaline, a not so pretty girl with an ambition to stay chaste. Then, there is a “love at first sight” situation with Juliet. These lovers (Romeo & Juliet) come from rivalled families, but their love overpowers their families hate towards each other. Their romance ends in a tragedy when they both think the other is dead and chooses to commit suicide rather than live alone, without their love. Gender Men basically run Verona. This is because of male honour. The rivalry between the Montagues and the Capulets, is driven by the fighting between the men of each family. This is true because in both all three fights, only the men are involved. Juliet faces some gender problems when her dad chose a husband for her and threatens to disown her if she does not agree to this marriage. Hate Hate is a theme in Romeo and Juliet because even though love and hate are usually opposites, in “Romeo and Juliet,” love and hate are two sides of the same play, as they are children from fighting families (the Capulets and the Montagues.) In the end, the hatred between their two families leads Romeo and Juliet towards their death. When their parents discover Romeo and Juliet dead in each others' arms, they speak to end the feud between the families. Mortality Mortality is a theme in the story because in the prologue it says that they are subjected to death. This foreshadows the fact that they will both die committing suicide. The forbidden love that was given made them commit suicide. Fate “Romeo and Juliet” the play is telling us that Romeo and Juliet are destined for tragedy, as it says in the Prologue.
