With the launching of the war in1939, The Germans were spreading out and rounding up Jews wherever they went. The SS Einzatsgruppen outfits that accompanied the invading divisions immediately set about the task of rounding up Jews, sending some to concentration camps initially. Some groups were summarily shot, others gassed in trucks. What awaited most however was a stultifying train ride to death camps such as Auschwitz, Treblinka, Dachau and Bergen-Belsen. The German people had been groomed several years by this time to cross the threshold from discrimination to annihilation. With the state not merely condoning but encouraging and organizing hate toward the Jews and other “undesirables”, proper volk had much to gain in participating in the torment and disclosure of their hapless Jewish neighbors.
