When I was told that there was a class being offered called Notorious Prisons, my first thought was, “now that sounds like an interesting class”! Then I began to think about the fact that a college class was even considered, let alone taught, about prisons; notorious or otherwise. This was something to actually think about. Prisons are places society usually doesn’t want to think about, let alone, learn anything about. At least, that is what I believed. Again, after much thought, my conclusion to having enrolled and now close to completing a class on ‘prisons’, all I have to exclaim is, “it certainly is about time.” - No pun intended - !! This led me to think about exactly what prisons have become in our country and honestly, the situation of prisons in our country. Sadly, it has become a national disgrace. √The financial and societal savings of providing an inmate higher education are enormous. Upon an inmate’s release, the cost-benefit of reducing recidivism will begin to be realized immediately. If we consider the additional benefit of this individual obtaining work, paying taxes, and contributing to the general economy, and the prevention of costs to victims of crime and the criminal justice system the benefits are significantly greater (Sherman). √The educational level of a parent is a clear predictor of both the educational achievements of a child and the level of a parental involvement in a child’s education. As the majority of prisoners are parents, the education of adults in prison can have a positive and long-lasting impact upon the lives of their children (Brown). √Higher education has a stabilizing influence on the correctional environment and can help a facility to run more smoothly and less violently than correctional institutions without educational
