Have you ever had the feelings of guilt? Have you ever done something that you wish you wouldn’t have done? Do you ever feel bad for people that less than you? Guilt is an extremely difficult feeling to deal with. Sometimes you can feel so guilty that it takes an emotional toll on you. In the book The Poisonwood Bible by Barbra Kingsolver, guilt is the most outstanding theme. The family continually struggles with overcoming guilt. The father had always dealt with the guilt of being a coward. He was constantly trying to prove to himself, God, and the rest of the world that he was not a coward. He did this by not leaving dangerous situations. He feels that trying to prove himself to not be a coward made him become such an overbearing and abusive father, husband, and pastor. In return the children and mother felt embarrassment for having to listen to his jacked up sermons knowing that Congolese people don’t know right from wrong. The mother understood that the Congolese people did have spirituality and they did have a God. They didn’t know what to call their God, but they knew there was someone out there more powerful than them. But by Nathan telling them that what they were doing was wrong was messed up in itself. The mother felt like who is Nathan to tell them that they are doing wrong when in actuality they are already doing what he wants them to do, just not the way he wants them to do it. For instance the whole baptism idea, Nathan wanted them to go to the river to get baptized but the villagers always tried to keep their children away from the river because of alligators. So by Nathan wanting them to go to the river they felt that he was trying to tell them to kill their children.
