The Genesis flood story is about God sending a flood, to destroy humans, but he tells one guy, Noah, to build an ark and save his family and every living animal. The Gilgamesh story is about a king who wants to be immortal, he needs the help from a man who survived a great flood. A flood that the gods had sent, he was the only one who survived, because one of the gods had help him to save humankind. Atrahasis story does the same things, they gods get mad and send a flood to destroy the earth, but on god told a man to save his family and one of each animal. These three stories have a lot in common. All three had the flood brought on them by the gods/God because of the humans. All to wipe out the humans. All three had one human who the gods/God trusted to save mankind and the animals. The gods/God found this person righteous enough to be the "hero". In each story the Noah figure (and Noah himself) built a boat and saved his family and each kind of animal. It rained a lot, and when the man got off of the boat, all three stories have them sacrificing to God/the gods. I think Israel is saying that they were sinful and God was almighty so he wiped them out for it, but God didn't want to get rid of all the humans for good so he saved one family, He let the human race continue now. I think the Israelites told this story because they wanted their children, and grandchildren to remember to obey God and not be sinful. The flood story reflects the journey of Israel for many reasons. The flood happened because the people were disobedient and sinful, and even though they had a big consequent, God still saved humans. During Israel's journey, the Israelites disobey and turn away from God sometimes, God punishes them, but he never gives up on them
