Shylock - Sinner or Sinned Against
“Shylock the Jew “has he sinned or has he been sinned against?
Shylock has been teased, mocked, spat on and kicked in public by the “Christians” of Venice. The line “Spet on my Jewish gabardine” tells us that they spat on Shylocks traditional Jewish clothes, which shows disrespect to the Jewish culture by putting their saliva on the religious clothes of Judaism. “You call me misbeliever”, The Christians think that they and the Christian god are above the Jews and their god in terms of religion because he believes in Judaism and not in Christianity the so they call them misbeliever because he doesn’t follow Christianity. “You call me cut throat dog” the Christians mock him in the business place, shylock is made a fool by fellow workers. “Foot me as you spurn a stranger cur “he is kicked as people would do to an annoying stranger dog. “I am like to call thee so again, to spet on thee again, to spurn thee too. If thou wilt lend this money, lend it not.” Antonio says he will spit on him again mock him again, tease him again and kick him again, if he lends the money or not, either way shylock is still being harassed because he is a Jew. Even though he undergoes all these insults he still finds the kindness in a speck in his body which he calls his heart to lend Antonio and Bassanio the 3 000 ducats without interest, despite Antonio admitting that he will harass the Jews again.
Shylock insists on his bond to hurt a fellow human when he does not get his money on time even though he is offered ten times the amount needed to forfeit the bond, but he insists he gets his bond to take one pound of flesh from Antonio, and he has not brought someone to attend to the wounds of Antonio so he intended on leaving Antonio to bleed to death.
