Dimmesdale is the town’s minister and is also the man Hester committed adultery with. It is ironic in the fact that he preaches to the town about confessing their sins, yet he has a sin that he has not confessed. Hawthorne uses satire to poke fun at the Puritans’ view of sin. The man who is supposed to be free of sin, has actually sinned the worst. Before Dimmesdale kills himself, he admits his sin to the whole town.
Antonio has treated Shylock very rudely and disrespectfully, even calling him a “dog” because of his religion, and now he is coming to him for money. Shylock uses this bond as an opportunity not only to get revenge against Antonio for all of his wrongdoing, but also to achieve more respect in the Venetian community. In addition, in Act 3, Scene 1, during Shylock’s speech to Solanio and Salarino, he declares, “If a Jew wrong a Christian, what is his humility? Revenge. If a Christian wrong a Jew, what should his sufferance be by Christian example?
In the book, Elie mentions a boy who is caught trying to steal bread. The Nazi’s feel they must make an example of him, because that kind of behavior could not be tolerated. So they made a spectacle of him, and called the entire camp out to watch him be hung. The boy struggled for thirty minutes as the jews had to watch, helplessly. That was the last straw for Elie.
They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy.” Furthermore, Paul writes about the failures to practice their great privileges and shows the effect their hypocrisy had on the reputation of God among the Gentiles. In Romans 2:21-24 Paul writes “you, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal?
The Merchant of Venice: The Dehumanizing Effects of Ignorance One cannot look at the dehumanizing effects when one does not play a role in the ignorant undertaking. In William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice, the author writes about ignorance in a way that dehumanizes the people of Venice. Firstly, Shylock-a Jewish resident in Venice dehumanizes Antonio as an act of revenge and ignorance. Secondly, Antonio-a resident in Venice, shows ignorance towards the Jewish community which makes Antonio racist towards the Jews. Lastly, the Portia-the beautiful women looking for a Sutter, shows ignorance towards the men who so badly want her love.
George knows that the other men will probably be more cruel to Lennie, and George's quicker methods are the only alternative. 46. Slim was the only man on the ranch who understood Lennie and George's bond. The other men are too lonely and isolated to understand a such bond. They couldn't percieve why George would be sad after he told them he killed Lennie in self
The Puritans in The Scarlet Letter ironically condemn Hester by hypocritically reacting to her sin and by foolishly praising the preacher who actually committed adultery with her. Once the puritans realize Hester was pregnant, they began to condemn her and give her harsh consequences. All together they banished her from the town and tried to take her daughter away from her. These consequences were given hypocritically since the majority of the town participated in witchcraft. The town, in order to justify it's sin, acted like they actually held standards by harshly attacking Hester's sin.
Next, during the biased trial, Mr. Glimmer continuously addresses Tom rudely, calling him “boy”: “Had your eye on her a long time, hadn’t you boy?” and “…do all that chopping and hauling for her, boy” (263, 263). Then, Tom also faces a cruel, harsh death, the manner of which a white man would never receive; he receives “seventeen bullet holes in him,” while trying to escape prison (315). Second, Mr. Robinson does good for others, seeking nothing in return. Every time Tom passes the Ewell residence, Mayella has a task for him to accomplish, such as chopping fireweed and toting water. Tom accepts no money for his assistance and is glad to be helping out to the best of his abilities.
And people being as they are, had to find someone to blame, So they chose the Jewish because they already didn't approve of their beliefs. In ancient times Romans demanded that the Jews convert to Christianity. If they didnt, they were denied citizenship rights and protection under law. At the end of the fourth century, as the fight between Christianity and Judaism intensified, Jews were labeled with the vicious title of "Christ killers," because
In regards to the hatred between Jews and Christians, it seems that even till this day many supposed Christians hate the Jews for killing the Messiah. However in the film, it is interesting that the punishment exacted upon Shylock is that he must become a Christian. Yet just because Shylock physically detaches himself from Jewish traditions, culture, and community and ‘converts’ to Christianity, it does not mean that he truly believes in Christian doctrine. Perhaps this punishment was meant only to be a punishment, simply a humiliation for Shylock. While the Duke seems to give
