1 August, 2013 Chapter One 1. The main problem during the Great Depression were the unemployment rates. A migrant worker is someone who moves within a country in pursuit of employment. Many men moved from place to place in search of jobs and income. 2. Steinbeck won the Noble Prize in Literature in 1962. Steinbeck wrote a total of 27 books. Steinbeck grew up in a place full of migrant workers which heavily influenced his work Of Mice and Men. Steinbeck attended Stanford University but failed to obtain a degree. Steinbeck's last name was originally "Großsteinbeck" but was shortened when his grandfather arrived in the United States. 3. This introductory passage sets the scene and setting. In comparison to the men at the ranch Curley's wife feels alone and insignificant. Also she may also realize that the men at the ranch are like mutts, very common and insignificant. 32. Curley's wife aspired to be famous in movies, she had an opportunity to get with a man who could make her dream come true. The man never responded to Curley's wife and she ended up with Curley. 33. Curley's wife compares Lennie's actions to that of a child's and doesn't percieve him as a threat. Steinbeck could be showing Curley's wife's want to fulfill her own needs. She could be overly worried about her loneliness getting to her to where she would go as far as letting Lennie touch her. 34. Curley's wife allows Lennie to pet her hair, however Lennie gets too rough and this causes Curley's wife to scream. This freaks out Lennie and he covers her mouth to stop her from screaming, Lennie kills Curley's wife. This event relates to when Lennie crushed Curley's hand because Lennie couldn't figure out how to stop what is casuing him to panic in both events. 35. Lennie believes that George is just going to yell at him for what he has done. George recites the story of the farm once more, but lacking the normal emotion. George knows that he must kill Lennie to save him from what the other men might do. 43. The impact of Curley's wife's death was about the same as that as the death of the puppy. Lennie doesn't realize the full consequences of his actions. Lennie thinks that after George yells at him it will all be ok. 44. Carlson was the one to put down Candy's dog. Just like the men would be the one to put down Lennie. Candy and his dog have been together since a young age, so have Lennie and George. Candy felt bad that he was not the one to put down the dog and George knows he will feel the same way. 45. George knows that the other men will probably be more cruel to Lennie, and George's quicker methods are the only alternative. 46. Slim was the only man on the ranch who understood Lennie and George's bond. The other men are too lonely and isolated to understand a such bond. They couldn't percieve why George would be sad after he told them he killed Lennie in self
