Jazzimen Stafford ENG 2510 Mr. Pressley October 21, 2012 “What Makes a Difference?” When I read the short story, “The Kind of Light That Shines on Texas” by McKnight, Reginald, I felt like the author was trying to get across to us that everyone should be created equal, because regardless of our skin color we are all the same on the inside. For instance in the book Clinton Oates, the narrator, sits in the window at home and remembers something Mrs. Wickham was explaining in class, something he didn’t understand at the time but now understood. She said that oranges and apples, leaves and flowers. The whole multi- colored world was not as it appeared to be. The colors we see look like that only because the light or ray that shines on them. Gilchrest decided they would play one on one with fully pumped volley balls. Three hits and you were out. No catch- outs. At first I felt like this was a set up for Clint because he was an African American kid and, everyone knew Oakley didn’t like African Americans. Clint ended up busting Oakley’s nose accidently. And just like that the game was over. I felt like Clint won the game because he got the first hit and he busted Oakley’s nose. Well that only made Oakley mad and gave him more than enough reason to beat Clint down. Oakley confronts Clint in the shower room and Clint asks “Why me?”, “Why not Marvin?” But I believe he was saying it in a way to show that Oakley was really a wimp and he was telling him to pick on someone his own size. Because Oakley was about 17 years old and Clint was a Scrawny 12 years young. Well the next day when Clint arrived at school Oakley was there waiting on him. Oakley slapped him around a couple times and then out of nowhere Marvin shows up pushes Clint to the side and whoops Oakley upside his head a couple times and busts his nose. I feel like Marvin knew how Clint felt about him and wanted to show him something different. Show him that he wasn’t the fat, black, lazy, nasty
