Introduction Monster: an Autobiography of an L.A. Gang tells the story of Kody Scott and how he joined and left the gang life. Kody Scott grew up in a world of violence, gangs, suffering, and in a life of struggle during the nineteen sixties and seventies. Kody was born into the gang life in South Central Los Angeles whether he liked it or not because of the corruption going on there at the time. Kody’s life would be greatly affected by the outnumbering gangs growing around the area where he lived.
Walnut Street Jail Janice Tighe Harrison College History of Criminal Justice Mr. Royer 10/17/11 As a Criminal Justice student it is important to know and understand some of the history of our Criminal Justice system. One aspect to know would be the history of our correctional system, in particular the Walnut Street Jail. Before the creation of the Walnut Street Jail life for prisoners was cruel and inhumane. As our text states “By the late eighteenth century, men, women, and children were till mixed together in many American jails. Before the birth of the modern penitentiary at Walnut Street (Philadelphia) in 1790, prisoners endured unimaginable squalor” (Roth, 2011, p. 86).
Bud Fox is tried as an adult and sentenced to 61.5 years consecutively in prison including 15 from when he was charged as a juvenile for nonviolent crimes. I feel this sentencing is extremely harsh due to the fact that he is still a minor and his 8th amendment is being violated. Bud Fox was not given a fair trial in my opinion. The judge in this case has let the victims that were impacted by Fox’s fraudulent investment operation play an emotional factor in his sentencing decision. I believe that the victims should be held responsible for making the decision to invest into Fox’s operation.
The film and book Shawshank Redemption is a story of a wrongly persecuted banker, Andy Dufresne, where he befriends a fellow convict, Ellis Boyd “Red” Redding, both serving time at Shawshank Prison with life sentences. Once at Shawshank, Andy quickly realizes that the prison warden and staff are corrupt and hypocritical which allows him to use his skills as a banker to gain the trust of the prison staff and warden thus allowing him to escape. The novella “Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption” was written by Stephen King and published in 1982. The film Shawshank Redemption was produced by Niki Marvin and Castle Rock Entertainment directed by Frank Darabont released in1994; casting Tim Robbins (Andy Dufresne), Morgan Freeman (Ellis Boyd “Red” Redding), Bob Gunton (Warden Norton), William Sadler (Heywood), Clancy Brown (Captain Byron T. Hadley), Gil Bellows (Tommy), Mark Rolston (Bogs Diamond), and James Whitmore (Brooks Hatlen). Though there are several dissimilarities between the film and book, the largest being found with the wardens, Tommy Williams, and Andy’s money; still allows the viewer to enjoy the film in absence of the missing details from the book.
Red of course bets on Andy but to his dismay, it was another newbie whose time was short lived. There is no book of literature (such as the Bible) to use as a guide to live by, so there is really nothing to gauge morals or ethics by other than a gut instinct. Because of this mindset, relativism is a way of life, as there is no such thing as absolute truth. Truth is symbiotic and subject to change according to the individual and society at large. Secular Humanists believe when you die, that’s the end of everything; there is no afterlife.
There was a heated gun fight and three of the thieves ended up dead, but Tom got away with Mattie. He declared to the marshals from far away that if the marshals tried to rescue her he would kill her. The marshals had no choice but to withdraw. Tom took her to his hideout and was told to then stay there by his boss, Ned, while him and his thieves rode off to another hideout. He agreed and as soon as the thieves left Mattie attacked Tom and tried to run but Tom caught her.
