Describe the human resource manager’s role from the Human Resource Manager’s viewpoint. The role of the human resource manager has shifted as the expectations of the work environment have shifted. In the past the role was much more defined around pushing paperwork, personnel files, maintaining employee files and many other administrative functions (Mello, 2002). With the focus on successful organizations operating with corporate social responsibility, it has shifted the ways HR teams operate. Corporate social responsibility is taking into consideration social and environmental factors into business decisions (Strandberg, 2009). Human resource managers have shifted to a much more strategic way of operating and away from a tactical administrative way. There is no one way to manage people, due to this HR departments and managers must be malleable in their administration of policies and culture to allow for an environment where employees can thrive. In today’s work environment there is a shortage of talent and companies are spending too much money on turnover and training. Creating an environment where employees have a solid career path can become high potentials for a company creating a strong internal succession plan. HR managers have to balance having a strong focus on the people with a strategic focus, systems and operational focus. Employers want to be considered the employer of choice now and they are building business strategies with their HR managers to make that happen. The role of the HR managers involves a strategic balancing act between the alignment of business vision and strategy and a people centric approach. HR managers must have a better operational understanding then in years past and be able to make decisions that not only will help the culture but increase the bottom line as well (Strandberg, 2009).
