The English and French Colonies in America The English and French were willing to venture for new life that could bring them wealth. The English were first to venture out for this new life. They were among the most important colonizers of the Americas. They set up local governments and a diverse economy. They farmed, fished and traded. Their main source of income was tobacco which they exported along with rice, timber and fish. They wanted immigrants to join them in America to increase their population. This increase gave them great dominance in America and later helped them in getting independence. A great number of immigrants came as indentured servants. These servants were usually young people who had to work off their transportation costs for years after arriving in the new world. (Simmons, 1976). Many English people came here to find religious freedom. An upheaval among the indigenous civilizations was created by the English. They brought diseases with them that the Indians could not fight off, even though they were usually bigger and healthier than the English. Smallpox was the leading killer of the Indians but measles and influenza played a part in the millions of deaths. The English held a higher degree of social equality than the French in the new world. Native Americans highly valued community rather than individualism. They were also very spiritual people. They did not necessarily believe in one God, but many. Europeans saw this as backward belief. This caused friction between the Indians and the English. Native Americans started slavery in America. They captured people of other tribes and enslaved them. They were willing to share their land with the English but the English wanted it for themselves which drove the Indians away and created much less land for them.
