Technology has come a long way ever since anyone could ever remember. The basic purpose for technology would be making people’s tasks simpler to perform. In the modern day world, technology is beyond that. People become dependent on technology now more than ever. Technology surrounds us everywhere; the common person in America will be holding a smart phone, driving a car, using a laptop, etc. Of course, all things listed above are found to be very useful, but is technology creating conflict in our society today. In this paper, I will argue on the negative influences online technology is having upon our society today. Technology, such as the internet, is causing students to lose their ability to think on their own. Students become dependent on spelling a word correctly with useful options like spell check. It becomes easier to research an answer rather than come up with it on your own. Search engines all over the web provide information that can easily become plagiarized, but in “our own words”. Originality is becoming a weakness with all sorts of accessibilities on the web. When did this become okay? Students are limiting their brain functions by using the internet as much as they do, so they start losing touch with their brainstorming capabilities and their critical thinking. Technology is influencing younger generations to a different lifestyle in negative ways. It is common to see a child holding an iPad, game console, or even a cell phone device almost anywhere you go. Before toddlers are even old enough to talk, they’ll be able to navigate their way through an iPad’s touchscreen. Introducing technology to kids at an early age can be tricky. It is a useful learning device with the proper applications and downloadable activities, but it most definitely should be limited. It limits the learning capabilities from the “real” world.
