The Army Crew Team: 1) Why does the Varsity team lose to the JV team? The team members of the JV team started their practice with the mindset of “Nothing to lose”. This relieved them from the burden of carrying the winning responsibility in their minds throughout the race. The JV team members trusted their team members very much when compared to their varsity counterparts. The basic atmosphere in the varsity crew was that, the members were critical of each other rather than focusing on the main goal of the race, winning. The JV team members gave feedback to the team addressing the entire team rather than pointing out the individuals of their mistakes like the varsity team did. This gave them a momentum to win each and every time they were on the race. Early when the teams were selected and they came back to Hudson River, the Varsity team started becoming unhappy over the fact that they couldn’t beat the JV team by a bigger margin. This implies that the team was filled with negative energy even though they won they did not discuss about the positive features of the team. The team members feel dejected, are no longer engaged, and are expressing disdain for their experience this season. No team members have emerged as leaders. At least several members feel that they personally carry the boat's weight. Each rower is focused on his individual performance as opposed to the team's performance. Rather than engaging in direct dialogue to resolve conflict productively, the team has resorted to finger-pointing. The team disputers not only act as a weak link in the team but also they disrupt the momentum inside the team. It can be seen clearly during the CEP training, when the varsity crew members called it as “touchy feely”. Also when the varsity team began to lose continuously, they begin to think that they are losers and concentrated in pinpointing others mistakes
