Ender’s Hardships Have you ever wondered what makes a great leader? It takes bravery, strategy, intelligence, loyalty, and honesty. Ender obtained all of these traits through his troubles. Ender’s hardships ultimately helped him become a great leader. His hardships were his childhood, isolation, and competition. First of all, Ender became a great leader because of his childhood bullies. Ender beating up Stilson ended his bullying on Earth. Ender realized, “I have to win this now, and for all time, or I’ll fight it every day and it will get worse and worse.” Ender was planning ahead for the future which is a trait that a great leader needs. In addition. Peter picking on Ender ultimately made him stronger. Ender in the mind game, “Instead, he found a mirror. And in the mirror he saw a face that he easily recognized. It was Peter, with blood dripping down his chin and a snake's tail protruding from a corner of his mouth.” This is Ender’s worst nightmare – looking into a mirror, and seeing Peter watching him. Graff changes the rules to make Ender work harder. Ender thought, “Everything they can do to beat me, thought Ender. Everything they can think of, change all the rules, they don't care, just so they beat me. Well, I'm sick of the game.” They make Dragon Army fight earlier and more often than any other team. Ender feels like his competition isn’t just against the other boys – it’s against the whole school. Ender isn’t a killer but a winner. Anderson tells Imbu, "Ender Wiggin isn't a killer. He just wins – thoroughly.” Anderson tries to tell Imbu that Ender isn’t really scary because he’s not a killer, just a winner. This seems like a slight cheat since what Ender is winning is a competition to the death.
